Extracting lossless audio

Hey there!

I've got a mpeg2 video from a minidv camcorder transferred to my computer via firewire!

The camcorder records the audio in PCM wave (lossless)!

How do I extract the audio stream to wav (lossless)?

I did look for PCM wave, but couldn't find any satisfying results...

Sandra

edit: When I open the mpeg2 video in mediainfo it says MPEG Audio 224kbps 48KHz, which is actually lossy? Any idea what went wrong with the lossless audio stream?

You may use eac3to:

eac3to input.file output.wav

or for multiple monowavs;

eac3to input.file output.wavs

Edit:Sorry i've just realized you are using a mpeg2 camcorder; which means it makes mpa (mpg audio/ or ac3), so you have to re-encode it to pcm. But command line which i gave above is gonna work in transcoding job.

^ ok thank you rica, but why does mediainfo say that it's MPEG AUDIO?

Isn't that lossy then?

I want to guarantee it's 100% lossless!

sandra, i've edited my post.
I'm afraid it must be lossy since it's compressed(/encoded) to mpeg2.
If it were a classical DV camcorder, you would get pcm but in your case you should transcode it if you wanna get the pcm.

What did I do wrong?

Could you upload a short sample as is?
Or simply say what camcorder you are using.

It seems not an mpg2 camcorder but a classical DV camcorder.
So i suspect of your capture/recording method.
And it is time to upload a short sample.

You have to capture DV as is.
I suppose your capturing software makes re-encoding; that is the problem.

I just opened the raw dv avi file with mediainfo and it says PCM audio, which means it's lossless...

So what's the best way to extract the audio stream from this avi file to wav?

AviMuxGui, hit generate data source from files, then extract your pcm stream.

I was using Amcap; suppose it's not freeware now.
(But an evaluation version still exists.)
