Problems with 2pass VBR

I can understand frustrations with current monitors and senior DVD2SVCD staff about newbie’s not reading the Q&A. But rest a sure that I have lived in the Q&A site for the past 2 weeks looking for an answer to my problem but with no avail.

I recently had to rebuild my system, and after 43 successful DVD back-ups it appears not to be working for me. I'm using the 1.0.9 build 1 version because I had the most success with that version. I can encode my DVD using CBR and CQ but I come out with audio synch errors. The audio errors are that the sound is lagging behind the film by my guess about 2 seconds. I've read other posts and have tried using vstrip and internal routines with combinations of CBR and CQ still with the same audio synch errors, a 2 second lag. The problem with VBR is that TMPG will not encode any of the frames. When DVD2AVI is done and it calls TMPG I get a flash the frame the frame I want to be encoded and then TMPG goes black and the frame count never moves (ex. 0/23799). Although the status bar will record progression, it seems to be stuck in a loop. Now granted I'm trying to copy only the last IFO in the Patriot for a test

If someone could please help me I would greatly appreciate it.

First please upgrade back to 1.10.1a so that we may have common ground to work with.

Once you have a failed attempt in that version post your logfile using cut and paste. Try to start from scratch including the ripping with this new version.

Now you are aware that TMPG has a 30 day limit on mpeg-2 encoding if you don't register it don't you?

I am aware of the 30 day registration period and I have registered. I had to cancel the TMPG encoding process because I was getting the same results as listed above, I'm encoding at a Rate Control Mode of 2pass VBR. What is the other option in the newest build - Automatic Variable Rate? Also here are some of my computer specs: CPU Duron 950, 256 DDR, more than 20 GIGs of HD space. Once again thanks for the help. Is TMPGEnc's time counter going and the frame at 0/<number of frames>? If so, I think it's still working. In the older versions of TMPGEnc, the 1st pass of the 2pass VBR was always black and didn't start showing the image until it hit 50%. This came to mind, when I looked at your log file and saw TMPGEnc 2.56.39.143 Plus. I've got 2.58.44.152, which does have a preview for the first pass. Try upgrading your TMPGEnc to the latest build. (Which might be later than my version.)

I'm not sure about the audio sync problem. With CB and CQ it should be in sync.

I think that your right about the CQ and CB but before the rebuild of my system everything was perfect even CQ and CB. Thanks for the tip I'll let the whole process go over the night add see what happens first thing in the morning.

Also I have to use Daemon for my bin/cue files because Nero ver. 5.5.4.3 isn't recognizing the bin file. This is strange because that also worked before the rebuild. My point is that I have PowerDVD and I can't seem to figure out how to open the cue file for the newly mounted drive from Daemon. If there are any thoughts on that I would appreciate it.

That Nero version could very well be your problem. You really need to upgrade it. I think there has been like 10 versions since then.
Last I saw they are up to 5.5.9.9 or something like that.
There is a known SVCD bug in those older releases that was fixed around 5.5.8 or so.

That would be great news about the upgrade to Nero. I just redid the last IFO in the Patriot this time with CCE SP 2.50 and I still have that audio synch error, speech is lagging around 2 seconds behind the action. But when I tried a previous version of CCC 2.6x (I believe) I had no audio synch errors but I also had no chapters.

Anyway, sorry I have a tendance to drift, I'll upgrade the Nero v5.9.9.9 and reburn. Is there a better version of Nero that will this solve the audio synch errors? I must be doing something wrong to keep getting these problems. Here is the lates log file hopefully it can help.

I have read somewhere, that sometimes creating the Title picture may cause asynch probs. So, try to disable the Title picture creation.

You need to open the *.cue file in Nero, not the *.bin (File - Burn Image)! The current version is 5.5.9.17. Anyway, possible "SVCD bugs" in Nero should not affect us as long as we simply use it to burn the cue/bin files created from VCDXBuild.

I've upgraded to Nero 5.9.9.9 and File - Burn Image is working again, thanks for the good suggestions everyone. I'm still having the audio synch errors though, sound trailing action by about 2 seconds. I'll give Abond's idea a chance which was disabling the title picture and see what that does for me. If there is any other suggestions please reply I'll try anything.

Well I've tried Abond's idea of removing the Title picture. I also upgraded to PowerDVD 4.0 so I can now view my *.cue file without burning it, so I elminated the Nero aspect of my problem.

I still had the problem of my audio synch lagging 2 seconds behind the actual picture.

Here are my ideas: It can't be in encoder (CCE SP 2.5). I used both vStrip and Internal Ripping both got the same result so it may be with the ripper. But maybe there is something in bbmpeg that I'm not seeing, after all thats where the mux and demux takes place right. Its not in BeSweet. Any ideas?

Check for any 0 length chapters at the beginning of the DVD. If there are any de-select it and rip again.

Make sure you have ripped with the internal routines or Vstrip. If you ripped with anything else redo it with one of these 2.

Make sure there is no "this movie has been formatted to fit your screen" part.

I got it!!!!

What I did was follow what mlkirch did with his post on "Sound out of synch with video". Read the entire thread and the last portion states exactly what he did and here is what I did:

-I downloaded DVDdecrypter 3.0 from the download page.
Rip the VOB's
-Open up the ripped copy in DVD2SVCD and re rip. This is a question of mlkrich and mine is to, how to convert a DVD with out re ripping it if you've used another ripper program. But why mess with a good thing, I worked for me.
-I encoded the Title Picture as well with no problems

I did the last 2 chapters in the Patriot and every worked fine. I'm now trying to convert the entire movie "Star Wars 2" and I'll let you know later today if everything works with that.

I had a similar problem with a rip recently, and it has happened only once. The rip froze in the encoder, I ran it through dvddecrypter and then back into d2s, disabling the internal rippers. Rip froze in the encoder again. I then loaded the .vob's created with dvddecrypter back into d2s, but enabled the internal rippers, and it converted without a hitch. I don't have a clue as to why this worked, and have not been able to uncover any documenting information on it yet, but I'm pretty sure someone else has covered this issue.

DVDdecrpyter is known to create issues with DVD2SVCD.
The only approved way to rip a DVD is using one of the two included rippers.
As a last resort SmartRipper is OK, but only if the other two fail.
Each ripping program has it's own slightly different way of writting the file out. Dvddecrypter is especially bad at this.

I have successfully used DVDDecrypter with D2S with Star Wars Episode I. The internal ripper does not support multiple angles and would rip angle 1 but I needed angle 2 so I get the opening in German.

There are rare instances when unsupported rippers will be the only thing that works, but they are still not recommended.
