OT: leaked DCPs?
Dear forum.
Sorry for maybe being a bit off-topic here, but none of the other forums seemed to be a better fit. In general, I'm fine with watching my movies from UHD, but for those which use HFR (with 48 fps) like The Hobbit, one gets only the non-HFR versions (because HFR 48 isn't specified for BluRay). So I wondered if there were ever leaks of DCPs for feature films? The DCPs, as far as I found out, are of course also encrypted when they get to the cinemas, probably with the actual key even encrypted with a projector specific key. The general principle should be the same as with AACS: Content (the DCP) encrypted with some actual symmetric key and some framework of keys which which it's tried to prevent leaking of that actual key. But just as with AACS, the actual key must at some point be present in the memory of the device or otherwise they movie couldn't be played. Would be thankful for every information, don't hesitate to send via PM, if you don't feel like answering publicly. Thanks, Colossos. PS: Oh and to the people from the industry, surely reading along: Still don't get why you probably spend millions of USD for DRM schemes which in the end typically always just fuck up the honest comsumer. Real pirates anyway seem to always find a way, but those who just want to play their bought stuff, even after a license server goes down, or after the lasth hardware BD player has been produced are screwed. In my case, it's obviously not the above - wouldn't need the DCP for that, but that you're not capable/willing to provide movies in the fully quality (here HFR) for buying. And it's not that I wouldn't pay a considerably higher price for it. |

Being entrusted with DCPs sometimes: That would be outside of the principles of Fair Use.
DCPs being not intended for personal use, and with physical film stock rolls gone: These are the only files that content owners, also small studios/Productions can get any payment for. (those that can not command supporting bodies like "Filmförderung") HFR: It is well possible now to generate your own from sources you own. You may use RIFE and you are not stepping on anyone's feet. UHD-BD supports 59.94p and 60p and you are welcome to try that and roll your "own".

Well, in a way I agree, but whether you believe it or not, my intention wasn't (and isn't) piracy in the profit making sense, I wouldn't even share such files.
If it goes by the opinion of the industry, than likely circumventing AACS/etc. is already beyond fair use, and their trend seems to go anyway back towards gaining full control, which they more or less have with streaming and which I guess is a nice byproduct for them of the slow but steady demise of physica media. Also, it seems doubtful, whether having/getting a DCP for an older film, which anyway no longer plays in cinemas and which is long available via BD/UHD and streaming would make a real difference for them money wise. And I do think, that they deserve their money - my BDs/UHDs/etc, I always buy (legally) and the only reason for me to get AACS keys is to ensure that I'm not screwed at some point. If there was some usable way to buy HFR/4K/3D, I'd go that and not need to ask for DCPs. And quality-wise I'd guess one would be better off with the non-HFR version than anything interpolated? |

Beauty all depends on shutter time.
Perfect animations like Cars 1,2,3 3D have so perfect motion blur that I see no incentive to HFR such source. For the other sources get beautiful results with RIFE interpolation, well worth the effort. Reinterpolating 4K50p 4K59.94p, 4K60p on almost daily basis, from my self-shot footage and the occasional restoration project. Removing all sensor artifacts before HFR may come as a tedious task. Right now diving into the dirty tricks of Panasonic's FT-2...FT-7 Toughcam's "Venus Engine" over their development years 2010...2017 ...gaah, low-luminance-pre-and post echoes on every frame while medium-luminance parts of the same low-light frame are pulldowned 25p on 50p Letting any TV do temporal interpolation has proven far inferior and asks for artifacts.

yep, same here

This would be a pretty massive problem, way bigger than the usual BD rip around the torrent sites. This is because - unlike BD & UHD-BD .m2ts, .ts files capped from linear channels etc, an .mxf file from a DCP is never ever expected to be seen by a consumer, which makes any ripping a de facto leak. Leaks are no jokes, there are big legal problems with them, and they always end up in one way: the person responsible for it gets fired and can never find another job in the industry again 'cause nobody is gonna hire him. In the case of private key leaking, that's even worse 'cause everything needs to be replaced which is a pretty massive effort and a recipe for disaster. In the case of just the mxf being leaked, albeit encrypted, that's less severe but it's still gonna be punishable. I know a friend or two in this sector who are literally terrorized by leaks 'cause they have very dire consequences for those involved, no matter if they weren't willingly cooperating and they just got hacked. I won't make names, but I've seen 4 people getting fired by being victim of this (3 of which I didn't know and one of which was a friend of a friend of mine). This last guy (who shall remain nameless) has been struggling to find a job since 2015 and had to change sector entirely, despite him being totally innocent and if anything just "reckless" as he used to use his private PC for "convenience" to connect to the company VPN and remote to the company servers when there were issues during the weekend or if he needed to check stuff late at night when he was at home. He also liked to play games, he downloaded the "wrong" mod and he got hacked. Nobody (and I mean nobody) was willing to hire him after that. It's a small world, everyone knows each other and as the word spreads, disinformation is enough for recruiters to put a "do-not-hire" mark on a person forever. You should NOT encourage leaks. Leaks caused by hackers ruin honest people's lives. yes and in general even back in the normal BD era there was always the option of delivering a 25i TFF or 29,970i TFF version which would have been bobbed to 50p and 59,940p respectively if they really wanted HFR.
