A side effect blanking titles...
Hi all,
In the last versions of VobBlanker (and IIRC, also in pgcEdit) audio and subs status are reset to zero in blanked PGCs, because seems this is the right choice. Well, this is the second time I've found this problem, so I'd like to share it. This is the situation: One VTS with the main movie (say PGC 1) and an intro (say PGC2) When playing the DVD, you can select in the menu your favourite audio/subs but when you selects "play" the DVD plays first the intro (which is blanked, can be with pre to post trick done or not, it is the same) and after, the main movie. The result is that your audio/subs selection is lost, and reset to the first one. (I've tested this in PowerDVD and WinDVD, but not in my settop) Recovering the original status of the audios, (with a blank cell instead of PGC 2) powerDVD and WinDVD keep the audio selection.. So, the only solution I can imagine is to add a checkbox to reset or not the audio/subs status in blanked PGCs. BTW, deleting playback of PGC 2, I got the same situation jsoto

Hummm. Ennoying!
I'll would like to test this further, but for now I'm verry busy. (Installing a new PC is horrible!) I think right now at a possible solutiion: copy the contents of the substreams SPRMs, and force them back later. May be difficult to do, though... Anyway, thanks for the info.

An alternative (and easier) solution is to add one audio pack (silence) at the end of the blank cell per each "deleted" stream. The blank cell we are using is 5 packs size (one nav and four video), so adding two or three packs (one per audio) is not too much...
Anyway, why do we have to clear the audio status when blanking? May be because Phillips verifier complains? Phillips complains about almost everything you can imagine... even in originals. From the changelog: I've added this "bugfix" (clear audio/subs status)in VB 1.5.0.8 (09-11-2004), but AFAIK nobody had a problem with it in the previous versions. jsoto

IMHO, the 'real' standard is what the players are able to do, not really what they are supposed to do.

Hi jsoto,
I don't understand much of the technical aspects your addressing, but I have a simple question I think is related. When using VobBlanker, should I check the boxes for 'Clear audio/subs status' or not? The default setting is unchecked. Last edited by TomBrooklyn; 17th December 2005 at 16:54. |

I've never experienced this issue because , I think , i ever use to blank intros and then I use to use the "Jump to PGC upon DVD Insert" Macro in PGCEdit , so the intro is never played !!!

I never check them. I know its not fully standard, but they are lots of originals with the same non-standard "issue". And I do not know any settop which complains.

No, it is'nt.
PgcEdit's macro checks the coherence between the data stored in the PGC tables of the IFO versus the general domain tables VMGI/VTS_MAT, but pgcEdit does not explore the VOB files to see if the audio/subs tracks are really there. VobBlanker's stream status reset is done (if checked) when the PGC is blanked, that is, no audio and no subs will be in the VOB file in this PGC. I didn't check it, but probably if you delete the PGC in VB (or kill playback, removing the cells in pgcEdit) the issue will not appear... In any case these two options are not allowed in Titles domain. jsoto

Tom,
If your player doesn't experience a problem, leave this checked. It is a convenience, especially for cycling with remotes. Regards

Also, it's a very good idea to use "Jump to PGC upon DVD Insert" always....You'll avoid the potential problem in any settop and the settop will go as fast as possible to the wanted PGC (menu or title) w/o playing blank cells or going across a lot of IFO files...

Also, I just realized the default for "Clear audio/subs status when blanking/stilling" under "Menu PFCs" is checked, but there is another option for "Clear audio/subs status when blanking/stripping" under "Title PGCs" which is unchecked by default. I guess I'll just leave them both as is. I don't understand what the difference between blanking and stripping is. I think I usually "blank." |

It's in PgcEdit - see guide on site.
Blanking = making a piece of video into a small blank Stripping = deleting unwanted audio and subpicture streams Regards
