Region Code Bug in Shrink v3.1.6/7

Hi all,

For DVDShrink.

Tried this on two computers; same on both. When opening region 2 disks with DVDShrink v3.1.6 onwards, I get a windows dialog box telling me to change the region code of the drive (it believes the drive is region 1). This occurs with both my DVDROM & my DVD+-RW (in both systems). Both drives (in both systems) have RPC disabled (firmware patched).

Versions that have tested ok:
3.1, 3.1.5 & 3.0 beta 5.

Versions that have been tested and given RPC change notification:
3.1.6, 3.1.6 beta 7, 3.1.7 beta 2.

Keep up the good work,
regards,
Bob

If you open DVD Decrypter with that same 'problem' drive selected and put the same disc in, do you get a region error?

If not, it must indeed be a bug.

That said, I've got loads of dvd drives (both RPC2 and RPC1) and I cant make DVD Shrink give me that error.

Hi Lightning UK,

Thanks for replying. I do not get the bug on either drive on either machine with DVD Decrypter. It is indeed a bug in DVD Shrink in versions 3.1.6 onwards.

Regards,
Bob

Are you getting an "error" (that will not let you proceed) or are you getting a "notification" that conditions exist that your drive must be set to the proper region to continue. I have seen that many times with Shrink and DVD Decrypter, but just let it proceed and no problems.

Hi,

It is the standard 'Change Drive Region' dialogue window. Eventually you run out of attempts to change the region, and thus it is impossible to proceed. You should not receive this message with RPC-1 firmware.

Bob

Having the same problem:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=71837

I believe it started when I changed the region in WinDVD to watch an R1 movie.... then changed back.

DVDShrink won't let me open R2 discs now saying the drive is stuck on R1 (even though its RPC-1 / region free!).

I just got the 3.1.5 DVDShrink exe (not the installer) from a friend and replaced my 3.1.6 exe with it...

... and all is peachy. No more region complaints from DVDShrink

Bug bug bug! Keep up the awesome work though

Hmm, how much is there to go wrong?!

LIGHTNING UK, maybe you'll know. I get the drive region with the "DvdGetRpcKey" report key ioctl. Is it possible that an RPC1 drive would return an RpcScheme value of 1? Maybe I should use a SCSI_PASSTHROUGH here.

Some drives fail on that command, others (I guess - never actually seen it!) could work, but return an 'rpc 1' state.

I check for both happening.

I do check for failure, and I check for RPC1, and only go through with the region dialog if the drive is successfully reported as RPC2 and the disc region doesn't match.

bobwillis, theboywonderuk, can you contact me directly about this?
dvdshrink@dvdshrink.org

Since I have no idea what's wrong, I'll need to try different things until it starts working on your systems. If you have time, I'll keep sending you different builds until they work.

Problem is most definitely firmware.
bobwillis' drive reports itself as RPC2, even with the firmware hack.

The solution in a later version of DVD Shrink will be to ignore the drive region code unless some definite ripping error occurs (failure to get the title key, for instance) which would be caused by a region mismatch. At this point, and not before, should DVD Shrink prompt you to change the drive region.

This ties in with various other improvements I intend to make in the ripping engine.

In the case of wonderboyuk, I'm still confused why WinDVD reports the drive as region 1, and DVD Shrink as region 2. Something fishy is going on!

Try with beta 4 anyway. I changed the region detection code to use a SCSI_PASSTHROUGH if possible, which should eliminate OS interference in the matter.

As a temporary workaround, there is a preference option in DVD Shrink 3.1.7 beta 5 to disable the RPC drive region check.

Hi DVDShrink,

With 'Check RPC2 drive code....' unticked, both R1 & R2 discs are opening fine again now. Thanks.

Best Regards,
Bob
