mplayer (ported from linux) available for win32: stand alone (no codecs needed)

mplayer ( http://www.mplayerhq.hu ) is one of the best video players for linux.

now you can try it on win32 (beta). MANY codecs (audio/video) are built in, so it's great as a reference player. very handy.

get it from ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/relea...2003-03-24.zip
it's about 6M but also includes mencoder as a bonus...
(at the same directory there's also a more recent version, marked as 'dev' without mencoder, but when i tried it, i couldn't get OSD, which is important for ff/rw when there's no gui).

to play a clip, just drag-n-drop it onto the mplayer executable or run from the command line: mplayer <clip_name>.

mplayer does have GUI and skins, but these are not included in the basic package. i didn't try using skins on win32 (on linux i managed the task quite easily). so we're talking command line app here. (if you try and have success, posting your experience here would be nice).

here are some shortcut keys for controlling the playback:
(you can find these and many command line options at ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/relea...a/mplayer.html )

<- and ->
seek backward/forward 10 seconds

up and down
seek backward/forward 1 minute

pgup and pgdown
seek backward/forward 10 minutes

< and >
backward/forward in playlist

HOME and END
go to next/previous playtree entry in the parent list

INS and DEL
go to next/previous alternative source (asx playlist only)

p / SPACE
pause movie (any key unpauses)

q / ESC
stop playing and quit

+ and -
adjust audio delay by +/- 0.1 second

/ and *
decrease/increase volume

9 and 0
decrease/increase volume

m
mute sound

f
toggle fullscreen

w and e
decrease/increase panscan range

o
toggle between OSD states: none / seek / seek+timer

d
toggle frame dropping

v
toggle subtitle visibility

j
switch subtitle language

z and x
adjust subtitle delay by +/- 0.1 second

r and t
adjust subtitle position

i
set EDL mark

enjoy and keep handy

Wow, amazing. Thats all I can say. I never thought this would happen since mplayer devs are so anti redhat not to mention windows . mplayer is in my opinion the best player on the planet so it is sweet that we can now enjoy this beauty in a windows environment.

EDIT: Just as a side note. Imagine how nice this will be to put this onto a cd and have it autoplay. No need to install any codecs. Perfect to give to your friends who may not know too much about this video encoding. Only problem is that it is a little big, but you wouldn't need mencoder I guess. Just one more thing, I wonder if it supports matroska since the mplayer plugin was added to the cvs. Time to find out I guess.

I compiled the simple gui for users who may not like the command line, I don't think it is available as an exe on the ftp. Just put it in the same directory. Now time to see if I can make some of those nice new skins work.

Did you attach this GUI? I'm just asking, because if so, then it hasn't been aproved for 6 hours (I don't mean to push anyone, I know that the mods have a life outside this forum).
What about your matroska tests? I won't be home for the weekend, so I won't be able to test it myself, still I would be very interested in this feature.
Best regards,
JimiK

the compiled GUI (i didn't see the attachment either, but i compiled it myself. sources are at the same directory as the download) is very naive, partially broken imho, and doesn't give something the shortcut keys i mentioned on my 1st post can't do.

if you wanna try it, just memorize:
ESC: quit
space: pause (toggle)
f: full screen (toggle)
0,9: volume
+,-: adjust audio delay by 0.1 sec
right/left : ff/rw 10 sec
up/down: ff/rw 1 min
PgUp/PgDn: ff/rw 10 mins

and give it a try. the current win32 gui does more harm than good atm imho. otoh, mplayer skins are something to look for (they give the full GUI as it was ment to be). so again, any experience with skins on win32 will be a welcome addition to this thread.

@avih, if it does more harm than good I can just remove it. I am not sure why all the buttons don't work but it seemed to compile ok. Probably most people would just memorize all the buttons anyway so it may be useless.
@JimiK, I will test for matroska support and post back.

EDIT: Matroska doesn't seem to work, I know there is support for it if you checkout from the cvs and build it, but there is no support for it in 0.9. I am not sure when mosu added support for it but maybe 2003 03 24 isn't recent enough.

it's ok to stay online, although obviously u've encountered the same problems as me i'll try to make the skins work. don't hold your breath though...

after a short test (for the version i posted in the 1st post here), it seems the version is compiled WITHOUT gui support. that means no skins for this version. i didn't check the other (and later) version since it doesn't have OSD, as i mentioned.

on the good side though, the version i tested supports VCD/SVCD/AVI/OGM out of the box, which is pretty cool imho. i think it should also work for DVD, but i didn't test that. it does NOT seems to support XCD.

avih, that is what I assumed too that it was not compiled with gui support, I tried for about 1hr to get it to work but it wouldn't. So, I also tried the later one too and it didn't work either.

i don't think it does as it is. however, there's a codec pack available for download. i didn't test it too much. i guess that any experience with formats playable with this player under win32 will be a welcome addition to this thread. including relevant setup of course.

If you use UPX on all files, MPlayer is 6 Mo.

I'll try the codec pack.

Yes, its very nice indeed, I really like it, but you do have to boot up a tiny version of linux which might not be too great for giving to friends.

actually, under the directory 'old', you'll be able to find mingw compiled versions (not so old at all btw), that are only 1M. and 850K with upx. worked for me, but it doesn't have osd when searching through the clip.
