High Quality Stereo waves from DTS

How to extract high quility waves from dts files.

I discovered a way to extract high quility waves from DTS files using quite simple and cheap? (Depends on what you want to use) programs.

For the purposes of testing how good this was I used Queens Greatest Hits 1 which has 24/96DTS soundtrack on it.

Programs needed, Used by me:
- Virtual Audio cable
http://www.ntonyx.com/vac.htm
- any good wave edit program, I have tryed with success
- Goldwave
http://www.goldwave.com/
- Steinbergs Wavelab 4
http://www.steinberg.net/en/ps/produ...ndex.php?sid=0
- PowerDVD 4
http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/p....jsp?ProdId=28
Will work with Windvd and NVDVD. (No reason why it won,t)

Install Virtual audio cable. Goto setup and make sure channels are set at Sync NOT Async.
(Totally froze up Powerdvd if set Async)
For this experiment you will only need 1 cable set up.

Then use Smartripper or whatever you are happy with to rip the DVD to chapters. Chapters make it so much easier to work with the files. One song at a time.
Then use Vobrator or whatever to demux the DTS track out of the Vobs.

As PowerDVD and other programs use the default waveout device to play the audio you have to go into
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Sounds and Multimedia.
Go into Audio tab and change Sound Playback - Prefered Device to Virtual Cable 1 Out.
Don't forget to change it back when done! You could spend ages working out why no sound from progs anymore.

Now fire up your audio editor program.
In goldwave change the Record In Device to Virtual Cable 1 In
This is done in the Device Controls Box under Preferences-Device.

In Wavelab it is done under Options-Preferences-Audio Card. You can leave all other settings alone unless you know waht you are doing. Or like me - play until you learn.

Now start PowerDVD and open the DTS file to use. Stop the file playing.
Now go into Configuration-Audio.
You will see that there are only a couple of options open to you now.
Choose 2 Speaker Wave Out and then check Dolby Sourround Compatable Downmix. I also under Advanced-Miscellaneous set up Enable LFE (And it makes a big difference in the final result if you like bass.). Dynamic range gives best results at Normal Environment.

Now start your program recording then start PowerDVD playing. You won't hear any sound but the VU meters on your record program should tell you if successful.

You should know what to do from here with the wavefile.

FYI you can capture the audio at the full resolution of your audio card!
First I used my Cmedia and can only do 24/44.1 but I borrowed an Audigy2ex and could capture in 24/96. (I am using PowerDVD XP that supports 24/96 and Multichannel MP3)
To do this set up the capture file in Wavelab (Handles 24/96 properly) to capture in prefered resolution. When you hit the Record button in the Transport Window it brings up the appropiate box to make changes etc. If you choose a resolution that your sound card can not handle - out of range -you will get an error message to that effect.

The resultant files burned to audio cd 16/44.1 make the original CD release sound like crap. Especially when enabling Pro Logic (I 'sniff' haven't got PLII Amp yet).
I am working on a way to use these high quilty files to make Ambisonic encoded files.

Hope this helps anyboby out there. BTY Please don't ask me for any softwares, as saying NO hurts. This is just a quick guide to get you started, on your way, and do as I do PLAY, you won't learn by not.
