.

hmm.. the DivX 5.03 properties window has changed very much.. they no longer have the "advanced" tab, with the quant settings and RC settings and all that.. anyone know what this whole "nth pass" thing is all about? and bitrate modulation? I wonder why they only made it DivX 5.03... it seems a lot of new stuff was added.. but I suppose that version numbers never really meant anything anyways.. I mean, take a look at m$'s version schemes..

concerning spyware components it is exactly as with 5.02...

- do not connect to the internet
- install the codec
- run ad-aware
- wait until it's finished
- set HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{21ffb6c0-0da1-11d5-a9d5-00500413153c}\ to the ignore list
- check the rest to be deleted
- one gain_exe can't be deleted...
- restart, and open your divx folder [/programs/divx]
- now, manually delete the last gain.exe - that's it

cheers Sill

I think it is easier to just disable gain with msconfig.

heh, I think I'm going legit and will actually purchase it. Been doing that with a lot of my software lately. Anyone know up to what version number they let you get free upgrades?

The reason you can't delete one gain.exe is because the program is running. Open taskmanager and kill the process called "Gain_trickler" or something like that, and you should be able to delete gain.exe without rebooting.

The Divx 5.02 key*en should work fine methinks. WTC XVID is better

are they talking about warez? it's legal to disable the spyware if you are able to do it..

EDIT: Ignore last message. It appears I have a regged 5.02. Once I uninstalled the registry keys for 5.02 and tried to encode using 5.03 it would not have it. It appears the divx.dll checks for the key etc.

The decoder is the .ax file. You should just be able to drop that in the system32 folder overwriting the previous version.

Let me know if it works.
let me quote your .inf-file:

Quote:
DivX5="DivX 5.0.2 Pro Encoder Only"
InfFile="divx50.inf"
UninstallDispName="__ DivX 5.0.2 Pro Video Codec __"
UnInstallPath="Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\DivX5PRO"
MediaClassName="Media Devices"
mfgname="Project DivX 5.0 Pro"
does it matter???

and about the .ax - it isn't bundled, at least I'm to blind to see the .ax

OK I did a little bit of tweaking. It's basically an alternate version of the instructions above using the trickler key. Remember to add that key to your ad-aware/spyware exclusions list. It's harmless as only a registry key anyhow.

All you have to do is download this file, extract it, run install.bat from the codecs folder (This registers the playback filter, creates a folder in "c:\program files" called "divx" and copies the relevant files. It does not create the shortcuts in your start menu so you will have to go there if you want to create shortcuts or run the configuration utility and/or player).

Right click the .inf file in the codecs folder and select install.

All done!

I believe this is all legal as all you are doing is installing without the nasty adware/spyware crapola. It's not even really a hack. SO I think it's OK to post it here. If not let me know.

@edit: link removed

P.S. sillKotchka the .inf file is only an installer for the codec and regkeys. The fact it says another version does not matter. I should have edited to say 5.03 before posting but oh well. It has no effect on the functionality whatsoever anyhow. It's still 5.03

sorry guys but I don't think creating custom installers and distributing them is covered by the license so I had to remove the link.
