Joe Dirt (Widescreen Only) Cheat Sheet

Joe Dirt (Widescreen) Cheat Sheet
Courtesy of 2CL.

I really love to hate those aspect ratio menus. Don’t you?

Tools I used:
For ripping movie to harddrive: Smartripper 2.41
For editing the DVD navigations: IfoEdit 0.95
For viewing VOB: DVD2AVI 1.76
For burning the final product: Nero 5.5.9.17 DVD-Video
______________________________________________
1. Create a folder named “Joe Dirt” and one sub-folder named “Files”.
______________________________________________
2. Ripped all files except VTS_06_* to “Joe Dirt”folder. This titleset is our unwanted fullscreen movie.
______________________________________________
3. Region Free every IFO and save.
______________________________________________
4. Get VTS Sectors.
______________________________________________
5. Backup all IFOs in “Joe Dirt” folder to your “Files” subfolder. If you need to copy your original IFO over your badly edited one, get VTS Sector afterwards.
______________________________________________
6. In VIDEO_TS.IFO / First Play PGC / PGC Command Table and edit.

OLD > 1.Pre Command (JumpSS VMGM) Jump to VMG PGC: 1 [30 06 00 01 00 c0 00 00 ]
NEW > 1.Pre Command (JumpSS VTSM) Jump to TitleSet(vts): 1, Title(ttn): 1, root-menu [30 06 00 01 01 83 00 00 ]

Translation: Bypass Columbia Tristar logo and pre-showing of aspect ratio menu..
______________________________________________
7. In VIDEO_TS.IFO / VMG Overview / Menu Language Units:1, do a “Delete Playbacks” of all 4 of your VOB-IDs

Translation: PG-13 Declaration and FBI Warnings bypassed along with Columbia Tristar Logo
______________________________________________
8. Save IFO and BUP
______________________________________________
Since we went straight to root menu in first play, our aspect ratio will pop-up later like after pressing play and
selecting a chapter. It gets to be a nuisance since we only want widescreen. Let’s preview and analyze our VOB-Ids in VTS_01_0.ifo.

Titleset 1 VOB-Ids Brief Descriptions

Language Menu Unit 1: [English]
Menu 5: [entry only] (Programs: 7) (Cells: 7) (uses VOB-IDs: 1) Main Menu & Aspect Ratio Menu
Menu 6: [entry only] (Programs: 1) (Cells: 1) (uses VOB-IDs: 2) Subtitle Menu
Menu 7: [entry only] (Programs: 1) (Cells: 1) (uses VOB-IDs: 3) Audio Menu
Menu 8: [entry only] (Programs: 9) (Cells: 9) (uses VOB-IDs: 4) Chapter menus
Menu 9: [entry only] (Programs: 19) (Cells: 19) (uses VOB-IDs: 5) Special Features Menu

Looking at our VOB-Ids Brief Descriptions above, our aspect ratio menu resides in VOB-Id 1 in Cell 5 of 7. What I use to view what goes to what cell is DVD2AVI. I’m not going to do a guide on using DVD2AVI in this cheat sheet, but what I can tell you is that in my findings, our aspect ratio menu in cell 5. Remember this cell number and it’s associated PGC-Menu 5. All PGC-Menus in this section are located in VTSM_PGCI_UT.

Another observation I do is monitoring the changes in my GPregs when I choose widescreen or fullscreen. (Important Note: View the GPregs before you get rid of the aspect ratio. Common sense) My findings on this is that when I chose widescreen, Gpreg <0> changes to 4132 and for fullscreen, Gpreg<0> changes to 4102. If we got rid of the aspect ratio menu, the DVD wouldn’t know which aspect ratio you picked since you couldn’t select what you couldn’t see. So down the road, we have to ensure that GPreg<0> holds the value of 4132 if we want our widescreen to pop up.

Let’s get rid of the annoying aspect ratio menu.
9. In VTS_01_0.IFO / VTSM_PGCI_UT / PGC-Menu_5 / Cell Playback section, delete playback on the following line.

Cell_5: playback time (BCD) 448 [000001c0]

Translation: Aspect ratio screen is disabled and non-viewable. YAAYYY!
______________________________________________
Refresh by clicking on another PGC-Menu and clicking on PGC-Menu 5 again.

Remember that GPreg<0> has to be 4132 for widescreen. A response after a menu selection is usually found in the post commands.

10. Since we are still in VTS_01_0.IFO / VTSM_PGCI_UT / PGC-Menu_5, go to the very first Post Command and insert a new Post Command #1. To do this, right-click on Post command line and a menu pops up. Choose “Insert Command”. You should get a new Post Command 1 with a NOP. Then hexedit by double-left clicking on line for your hex editor and edit this line as follows.

OLD > 1.Post Command NOP [00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ]
NEW > 1.Post Command Set GPreg<0> mov (set-val)<41321> [71 00 00 00 a1 69 00 00 ]

Translation: Widescreen movie will play now without aspect ratio menu present.
Details: Doing this, we forced Gpreg<0> to have the value of 4132.
______________________________________________
11. Save IFO and BUP
______________________________________________
12. Click on Get VTS Sectors button
______________________________________________
13. Preview to test
______________________________________________
14. Wasn’t that easy? Now we can burn our movie. Everything, except our fullscreen files, fits nicely on a DVD. I used Nero 5.5.9.17 DVD-Video successfully.

Language Menu Unit 1: [English]
Menu 5: [entry only] (Programs: 7) (Cells: 7) (uses VOB-IDs: 1) Main Menu & Aspect Ratio Menu
Menu 6: [entry only] (Programs: 1) (Cells: 1) (uses VOB-IDs: 2) Subtitle Menu
Menu 7: [entry only] (Programs: 1) (Cells: 1) (uses VOB-IDs: 3) Audio Menu
Menu 8: [entry only] (Programs: 9) (Cells: 9) (uses VOB-IDs: 4) Chapter menus
Menu 9: [entry only] (Programs: 19) (Cells: 19) (uses VOB-IDs: 5) Special Features Menu

How do you find this part? It would be valuable for doing other movies.

I figured out (by guessing) how to rip the bonus materials button from black hawk down. Right now im trying to get rid of the audio button as there is no selection.

Not all DVD are authored the same. This Language Menu Unit is DVD specific. This is how Joe Dirt was authored. Menus can be place in any order. The only statndard I believe is one PGC-Menu has to be Root. Usually it's PGC-Menu_1.

How I found it is very simple. Just view the VOB-IDs in you movie's Language Menu Unit and compared them to menus when DVD is played. It's not hard to figure out which is, say, our scene selection menus.

If IFOEdit doesn't help in viewing, I've used DVD2AVI & Vobrator.

I haven't done Black Hawk Down. If I understand you correctly, you want to disable your audio setup button in main menu? Sometimes it is referred to as "Language" menu.

Yes that is what im trying to disable, although it doesn't really matter if they select french audio nothing will happen anyway. It will just not play the english. I don't know where to look to diable this menu. I think it would be very helpful to many people if there was some kind of guide on this stuff. You seem to know your stuff well and could do a good job with a guide.

Do this...

In VTS_01_0.IFO/VTSM_PGCI_UT/PGC-Menu_7/PGC Command Table, edit

OLD > 1.Pre Command Set GPreg<7> mov (set-val)<0> [71 00 00 07 00 00 00 00 ]
NEW > 1.Pre Command (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 5 [20 04 00 00 00 00 00 05 ]

Translation: Audio setup menu is disabled in main menu.

2cool,

Why did you do link pgc 5? I don't understand that part. How did you know 1.Pre Command Set GPreg<7> mov (set-val)<0> [71 00 00 07 00 00 00 00 ] was what controlled the audio button?

Faenzamov

I got the above descriptions (in blue) by viewing the VOB-IDs. As you can see, PGC-Menu 5 or PGC 5 is our Main menu and PGC-Menu_7 or PGC 7 is our Audio menu. Pre-commands are commands done before the menu is ever played. They are located in PGC-Menus. That's why I went and put a pre-command #1 in PGC-Menu_7 to jump immediately to our PGC 5, which is our main menu. Pre-commands after PGC-7's first pre-command where not executed because navigation has changed.

If I had put a pre-command ,jump to PGC-6, instead of PGC 5, then I would've got Subtitle menu if you pressed Audio.

I hope I cleared things up.

Note: I was backing up a region 1 DVD.
