2Cool you explanations are great but how do you work all this out? I've managed to pick up a few hints e.t.c. but your guide looks so simple.

I do have a very in-depth diary but it was too big to post. I don't do this as much as it can be time consuming but I want people to learn and one day you will teach me something new.

Read and enjoy!

Edit: I tried to upload the zip but I don't see it? It says my attachment is uploaded and it's only a 9Kbfile. Hmmm...

These cheat sheets are awesome. I have a movie now that is small enough to fit with the menu and I was wondering how to get it to show just the menu and then play my movie. Hopefully I can learn enough from the cheat sheets to get my movie to work.

Learning to Backup xXx Widescreen. (real-time) by 2COOL

OBJECTIVE: Keeping the movie and menu. (one English audio and one English subtitles kept). The rest are disabled and deleted.

I know some of you have done this by now but I just wanted to provide some examples on how I go about my DVD editing. You get to see what goes on my mind. Everyday, someone is looking for some guide but again it’s hard to come up with one. Not all DVD are authored the same. So I decided that by giving examples, people might learn something and I strongly believe in learning by examples.

I was writing this guide at the same time I was IFOediting xXx so you would know that what troubleshooting methods I had to do in order to solve the problem. This DVD gave me slight problems in understanding the navigations, but in time the matrix opened up and revealed itself to me. I’ve provided you examples in disabling menu buttons, jumping to root menu, debugging, stripping audio, hexediting, …

There may be a million ways to edit this DVD but what works for me, may work for others.

Read and Enjoy

Tools I used:
For ripping movie to hard drive: Smartripper 2.41
For editing the DVD navigations: IfoEdit 0.95
For burning the final product: ImgTool 0.95 with reallocation of files unchecked.

1. Create a folder named “Triple X” and two subfolders named “Files” and “English” .
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Rip all files Triple X folder. I use Smartripper 2.41.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Start Ifoedit 0.95 and open video_ts.ifo
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Get VTS Sectors
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Check if all IFOs are really region free. If RCE exists, set your region code and save IFO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Backup all IFOs and BUPs in Triple X files by copying to Files folder. In case anything goes wrong with editing, you can revert to copying back original file.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. Go to VIDEO_TS.IFO/First Play PGC/PGC Command Table and edit.

PGC Command Table:
OLD > 1.Pre Command (JumpSS VMGM) Jump to VMG PGC: 1 [30 06 00 01 00 c0 00 00]
NEW > 1.Pre Command (JumpSS VTSM) Jump to TitleSet(vts): 1, Title(ttn): 1, root-menu
[30 06 00 01 01 83 00 00]

Translation: Bypass Columbia Tristan Intro Logo
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Go to VTS_02_0.IFO/VTSM_PGCI_UT/PGC-MENU_5/Cell Playback section. Edit the following.

OLD > Cell_1: entry point sector 0 [00000000]
NEW > Cell_1: entry point sector 8745 [00002229]

Translation: Bypass main menu intro and get buttons showing right away.
Details: I took the entry point sector from Cell 4 and substituted into Cell 1.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pre-determining by files sizes, I knew I could keep the menu and movie and exclude everything else. By doing so, I had 2 menu buttons to contend with: Xander Zone and Trailers.

9. The first thing you do is preview what exactly do you see when you select these 2 buttons. So then go into VTS_02_0.IFO/Language Menu Units and view all the VOB-Ids. We’re lucky that we got 5 of them as I seen VOB-Ids go pass 80. Here’s the run down with what I viewed. Note: In this case, IFOedit wasn’t to good with viewing so I used Vobrator.

Menu 5: VOB-ID 1: transition clip 1/transition clip 2/main menu/post-transition clip
Menu 6: VOB-ID 2: transition clip/subtitles menu
Menu 7: VOB_ID 3: transition clip/ audio set up menu
Menu 8: VOB_ID 4: transition clip/scene selections menu
Menu 9: VOB_ID 5: transition clip/Xander menu and all menus pertaining to that/trailers menu.

We’re in luck! Both the Xander and Trailers menus reside in PGC-Menu_9. So now, we know where to go.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. Go to VTS_02_0.IFO/VTSM_PGCI_UT/PGC-MENU_9/PGC Command Table:. Hexedit by double-left clicking on line.

OLD > 1.Pre Command Set GPreg<9> mov GPreg<14> [61 00 00 09 00 0e 00 00 ]
NEW > 1.Pre Command (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 5 [20 04 00 00 00 00 00 05 ]

Translation: Disable Xander Zone and Trailers menu buttons.
Details: We needed to edit the first pre-command as we didn’t want any anything playing after button select. Since I knew that PGC-Menu 5 contained the main menu and I can jump within the PGC domain, I substituted a LinkPGCN command. By doing the above edit, we got two birds with one stone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11. Save VTS_02_0.IFO
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12. Preview movie to test Xander and Trailer movie for button functionality.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13. It is safe now to delete VTS_03_* to VTS_14_* files as they were part of your XANDAR selections.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14. Get VTS Sectors

15.DEBUGGING

A. We have a problem now. We have successfully disabled the Xander Zone menu and Trailer but we also affected the Play button’s functionality. Pressing Play plays a transition clip and you’re back in the menu again. It’s got to be in the post commands in VTS_02_0.IFO/VTSM_PGCI_UT/PGC-Menu_5 because that’s when commands are done after you press a button. Did you remember that PGC-Menu_5 contains our main menu? Let’s go check it out. Here is the post commands and let me show you how I analyzed/debugged this.

1.Post Command If GPreg<14> == (cmp-val)<17672> then (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 9 [20 a4 00 0e 45 08 00 09]
2.Post Command If GPreg<14> == (cmp-val)<16643><'A '> then Goto line# 12 [00 a1 00 0e 41 03 00 0c]
3.Post Command If GPreg<7> == (cmp-val)<1> then (LinkPGN) Link Program 1, [button=1] [20 a6 00 07 00 01 04 01]
4.Post Command If GPreg<7> == (cmp-val)<2><' then Goto line# 10 [00 a1 00 07 00 02 00 0a]
5.Post Command If GPreg<8> == (cmp-val)<12288> then (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 5 [20 a4 00 08 30 00 00 05]
6.Post Command If GPreg<8> == (cmp-val)<32768> then (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 9 [20 a4 00 08 80 00 00 09]
7.Post Command If GPreg<15> == (cmp-val)<1> then (Link subset) NOP [20 a1 00 0f 00 01 00 10]
8.Post Command Set GPreg<13> mov (set-val)<0> [71 00 00 0d 00 00 00 00]
9.Post Command (JumpSS VMGM) Jump to VMG PGC: 2 [30 06 00 02 00 c0 00 00]
10.Post Command Set GPreg<7> mov (set-val)<0> [71 00 00 07 00 00 00 00]
11.Post Command LinkPGN) Link Program 4, [button=6] [20 06 00 00 00 00 18 04]
12.Post Command Set GPreg<14> mov (set-val)<0> [71 00 00 0e 00 00 00 00]
13.Post Command Set GPreg<7> mov (set-val)<0> [71 00 00 07 00 00 00 00]
14.Post Command (LinkPGN) Link Program 4, [button=6] [20 06 00 00 00 00 18 04]

I see 2 lines with PGC 9 in it. We were just in PGC-Menu_9 so I was kind of wary of it. Remember now how commands work. If the first line is not true then the next line is checked for trueness. When it does find a line that is true, then that line will be executed. Unfortunately, IFOedit doesn’t have a debugger program so I have to manually do my own.

B Let’s start with a half way point, post command # 6 looks good. Let’s hexedit that to link to say…PGC 5. .

OLD > 6.Post Command If GPreg<8> == (cmp-val)<32768> then (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 9 [20 a4 00 08 80 00 00 09]
NEW > 6.Post Command If GPreg<8> == (cmp-val)<32768> then (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 5 [20 a4 00 08 80 00 00 05]

Save/preview/test: Press Play and look for any changes
Results: No change in symptoms.

C. Since there was no change, then we know the first half of post commands are not where our problem lies. It’s got to be 7 to 14. Let’s pick Post command # 9 to test. You don’t have to hexedit this, just right click and select value. Make a jump to PGC_1. Though it doesn’t matter which PGC-menu we pick, we just want to see if there are any changes in play. By the way, VMG PGC_1 starts your original DVD. We edited it earlier. So Edit PGC-Menu-9 as follows.

OLD > 9.Post Command (JumpSS VMGM) Jump to VMG PGC: 2 [30 06 00 02 00 c0 00 00]
NEW > 9.Post Command (JumpSS VMGM) Jump to VMG PGC: 1 [30 06 00 02 00 c0 00 00]

D. Save/preview/test: Press Play and look for any changes.
RESULTS: Columbia Tristan Intro clip plays. Xander Zone and Trailers still disabled.

Well what do you know! Now we need to go to our Video Manager (VMG) PGC-Menu 2 in VIDEO_TS.IFO.

E. Change Post command #9 back to PGC_2 and save. Go to VIDEO_TS.IFO/VMGM_PGCI_UT/PGC-Menu_2

F. In PGC-Menu_2, we have 61 pre commands, 1 post , and 1 cell in this PGC-Menu. My eyes first went to pre-command #37 as Title 1 is our movie. I also saw a lot of “If-then-goto” lines above that and pre-command #7 had the goto command to pre-command #37. Now how to make that true?

Easy. Here’s pre-command #7:
7.Pre Command If GPreg<9> == (cmp-val)<8192><' then Goto line# 37 [00 a1 00 09 20 00 00 25]

For this command to be true, GPreg<9> has to be a value of 8192. Looking to the value to the right, value of 8192 is 20 00. Now we know what the binary value is.

To make a force of GPreg<9> to be 8192, I went to the previous command, #6. We need to have a Set-Mov command present.
Using pre-command #1 as a example, we hexedit Pre-command #6 as follows.

OLD > 6.Pre Command Set GPreg<9> and (set-val)<61440> [79 00 00 09 f0 00 00 00]
NEW > 6.Pre Command Set GPreg<9> mov (set-val)<8192> [71 00 00 09 20 00 00 00]

G. Save/preview/test: Look for any changes.
RESULTS: Movie plays.

Okay, we’re making progress but wait, it seems there’s another problem. We’ve been clicking on Play first all this time. You see if you click on Trailers first and then Play, you’re going get a post transition clip and then your back in the main menu again. If you click on Xander Zone and then click on Play, you’ll get the movie. There’s something different about the Trailers button.

I monitored the GPregs to see what changes after I click on buttons for Trailers and Xander Zone. The only difference I saw was in the value of GPreg<14>. Trailers inputted a value of 176 while Xander Zone gave it a 0. The first pre-command in VTS_02_0.IFO/VTSM_PGCI_UT/PGC-Menu_9 was a jump to PGC-Menu 5 so that should’ve bypassed all commands after that.

I needed GPreg <14> to always be 0 before I went to press Play. We need to FORCE GPreg <14> to be a value of 0. Hmmm…Obviously, either button when pressed had to navigate to PGC-Menu_ 9. Let’s visit VTS_02_0.IFO/VTSM_PGCI_UT/PGC-Menu_9 again.

H. Go to VTS_02_0.IFO/VTSM_PGCI_UT/PGC-Menu_9 and look at the pre-commands. Hey! pre-command #2 shows GPreg 14 being set as 0 but it’s after our link to PGC 5. I figure lets to some pre-command swapping. Hexedit both as follows.

NEW > 1.Pre Command Set GPreg<14> mov (set-val)<0> [71 00 00 0e 00 00 00 00 ]

OLD > 2.Pre Command Set GPreg<14> mov (set-val)<0> [71 00 00 0e 00 00 00 00 ]
NEW > 2.Pre Command (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 5 [20 04 00 00 00 00 00 05 ]

I. Save IFO/Preview/test with clicking on Trailers first and then Play.
RESULTS: Clicking on Trailers keeps you in the main menu and pressing Play now starts the movie.

Whew! Now for this DVD work when burn, we need to have all VIDEO_TS.*,VTS_01_*, and our movie titleset, VTS_02_.*. Still too big to fit on a DVD. We need to do some stripping.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STRIPPING AUDIO

16. We’re going to keep only:
Audio 1: English (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x80)
SubPicture 1: English (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x20)

A. Select VTS_02_0.IFO
B. Click on VOB Extras button
C. Make sure all these checkboxes are checked:

- Strip Stream’s
- Correct VOB-Unit(Navigation Pack) Pointers in VOB files
- Correct original IFO files
- Remove P-Uops
- Remove Macrovision
- Adjust VOB-Unit pointers
- Adjust Audio/Subp point.
- AutoCopy Menu-files to destination

D. In your Destination directory filepath, browse to your “English” subfolder we created earlier.
E. Press OK
F. You should have only “Audio 1” and “Subpicture 1” checked and “Correct IFO tables” checked.
G. Click on “Strip it” button and wait until done. It’ll take a while.
H. When done, copy VIDEO_TS.VOB, VTS_01_*, and VTS_02_0.VOB over to your “English” folder.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
17. Open up your new VTS_02_0.IFO and click on “Get VTS sectors” button. Press OK for all messages.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18. Preview movie to check for errors or discrepancies. I hope there isn’t any.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19. There’s one more thing I want to do. Since we now have an English-only DVD, no sense on having a “AUDIO SET UP” menu pop up. So let’s disable that.

In step 9, our Audio Set Up menu is located in PGC-Menu 7. So go to VTS_02_0.IFO/VTSM_PGCI_UT/PGC-Menu_7 and input edit the first pre-command.

OLD > 1.Pre Command Set GPreg<9> mov (set-val)<1> [71 00 00 09 00 01 00 00]
NEW > 1.Pre Command (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 5 [20 04 00 00 00 00 00 05]

Translation: Audio Set Up menu disabled.

Déjŕ vu?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
20. Save VTS_02_0.IFO
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
21. Preview and test all buttons again to make sure that buttons need to be the way we wanted.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
22. Satisfied? Then burn you movie as you should be able to fit it on a DVD now. I successfully burned with Imgtool 0.95 with Reallocation unchecked

No offense people but I really don't see how or why you would want to put this much time and energy into somthing as simple as a movie-only backup. Myself and many others have made full disc backups of this and many other movies following our full-backup methods. When I say "full disc" I do mean "full disc". That includes subs, forced subs, all audio, all extras, etc. It is just like the original. The methods we follow (once you learn a bit about the tools) can be found HERE. Why not try something new? "Movie only" backups are not only easy to do but have been around for quite a while. Why not learn the right way and be able to do a full backup of any disc out there? Seriously, if you're going to this much trouble anyway! hehe

Well, I feel offended! Especially on my xXx thread. I was only providing one way for to people to keep their xXx original menu. It’s like going to school to learn something and getting counseled by the principal in front of everyone. Your guides got Scenarist and DVD Maestro plastered all over it. Not all of us has the same grand-standing setup as you. Maybe I’m offended that I’m still using FAT32. But, I’m REALLY offended by you calling my generous way of helping people through cheat sheets as “much trouble”. Like, I’m leading people in the wrong direction. It’s not too much “trouble” for me because I LOVE doing what I prefer to do. I think you’re offended by anyone who has to split thier DVD. Then, why do we have still have guides out there, especially here in Doom9, telling us on how to split DVD-9s, stripping audio, or even keeping the main movie!
My cheat sheets are bothering your ego, isn't it?

Maybe, one day, until I see at least 99% working method of compressing NTSC DVDs, I’ll move on to Scenarist or DVD Maestro. But right now, with my Win98 SE FAT32 setup, I’m content. I’m just someone giving back to the community after what I’ve learned from being a straight newbie. You know, it’s great to tell people of wondrous things and full-disk backups but you should’ve put your promotions on a separate thread instead of replying on mine. If you think that I’m keeping people from not moving on, then maybe I shouldn’t give anymore.

Update: I'm have upgraded to WinXP SP1

Actually, it is about 99% fully working. The only problem is on ILVU interleaving but, so far, the only disc I know of that does that is "The Abyss". This is not even to say our method does not work. It does! The only problem is a slight split-second pause where the interleaving would be. Hollywood uses hardware for this that we don't have.

What I am promoting is a more thourough method to keep the disc as close to the original as possible. Afterall, many of the "extras" are exactly what makes a DVD a DVD in the first place. Otherwise, it's just a fancy way to skip around in a movie.

The reason I posted on your movie-only thread was two-fold. 1) Many people (including you since you mentioned it) do not realize that it is possible to get a FULL backup of a disc! 2) There are a lot of us who, together, write detailed guides for doing exactly this type of backup and write software to assist.

We also spend a great deal of time both day and night on the #Doom9 IRC channel helping people learn and get past problems they are having. We do all of this without getting a DIME for our time or efforts. 90% of the time, the problems people have is they butcher DVD's like this and then end up with inconsistent results.

I'll tell you what, if you start hanging out in the IRC channel and answering all the many questions that arise from inconsistencies due to DVD butchering, I'd feel a lot better about the whole thing.

Oh boy! I take that as a SARCASTIC “no comment”! So what, my bicycle ain’t good enough to your Harley? My bread and water ain’t tastier than your cheese and wine?! I do with what I got and I make the best of it. Your “no comment” is like twisting a silent knife on the way in. You shouldn’t have even posted it! I respected your first comments but after that, is was downhill.

The “V” in DVD not only means video but also versatile. We do what we want with our backups, even if we do want to skip around fancily. Extras are nice but I’m willing to sacrifice them to achieve my goal.

First of all, I wasn’t trying to do a “movie-only”. Last time I checked, a “movie-only” meant no menus. A lot of people, I’m sure, DO realize it’s possible to get a Full backup. Sheesh! All it takes is one successful backup movie to prove it possible but I feel the consistency to backup any movie is not there. Why do we even have forums if it was that easy? I’ve done SVCDs before I did DVDs and I also know about the encoding times per DVD can be taxing. If I had more than more than one computer, my life would be grand. There’s a lot of new DVDs I buy, when they come out every two weeks, to be backed up. There's more, counting the many in my collection, that I haven’t done yet. With one computer, that’s a lot of time and work. Some people don’t mind splitting their DVDs in less time.

You came across on my thread like your preaching your religion and you want everyone to convert. You meditated and targeted me as an example to change others, like me, to follow your ways, even if it works. That’s UNCOOL! To repeat myself, you should’ve have posted a separate thread to all and not emphasizing on certain individuals.

That’s like saying 90% of all people, like me, asking for help are “butchers”. That’s an insult to my face if I ever see it coming! Not to mention to many others as I am not alone. Is this what you think of us all whenever you lend your help? We all start off clueless but sooner or later, the more we do, the better we get. Maybe some people don’t catch on quickly, but I believe in helping the weakest link as best and courteous that I can. If they want to go to a higher level, more power to them. Don’t come across as an arrogant king! How can you respect a person who calls you a “butcher” of DVDs?

I’ll still give my best to help others and I don’t need you to rain on my parade.

Having a guide for each individual DVD is pretty unneccessary. If you take the time to read how to use the programs available you can adapt for any situation. I think the whole "give a man a meal and you've fed him for a day, teach him to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime" proverb fits well here. This is stuff I'd expect to see on vcdhelp.com

You're right on both accounts, Flash. If people want to turn this place into a VCDHELP, I'm afraid I can't do much to stop it. I'm done.

I found some interesting points in both of your guides that have helped me. I think most ppl here can make there own choice on what methods they want. Its nice to have a few extra examples around, not that I uses either of your methods, but it is good to see what ppl finding sucsessful.

OK this is getting ridiculously irritating. And I wasn't even going to say anything until I started reading 2Cool talking about how our methods aren't good enough for the effort. But now that I feel he's attacking us, I feel the need to defend as well as reply.

The_Flash stated it correct. This is a blatant disregard for the maxim "Teach a man to fish...". Hopefully not many people actually use these guides, or soon we'll have a following of zombies who think movie-only is actually '2cool' (couldn't help myself!)

Hmm lemme guess.. 2cool learned his methods from Doom9.org? So why can't others too? Once you learn the basics (and all these guides are BASIC, IMO) you can do any one of these silly 'cheatsheets' with your eyes closed. And that's saying a lot, since I'm Eyes`Only! (oooh I'm just full of em today!)

Wanna really impress us? Learn to do full DVDr, then post a 'cheat sheet' using those methods. It's easy to butcher a DVD. Much easier than to actually take the time to make something worth keeping! Yeah I know, everyone has 2 kids and a wife and can't be bothered to make something that's got a bit of quality to it... I've heard it all before.

Oh and as for Fat32.. passe. No wonder you haven't learn the right way to do things. You CAN'T. Your refusal to update yourself to the 2000s is keeping you limited. I guess in that case I can understand why you're posting butchershop recipes...

Oh, and your ignorant comment about 'Versatile'.. Do you REALLY think it means that? When they used the word "Versatile", they were referring to all the things you can DO with a DVDr. ie. subtitles, infinifilm, button over video, seamless branching, etc. All of which you remove with your recipes. So you're actually creating DBDs (i won't even explain the B.. maybe someone will figure it out!)

You obviously aren't keeping up. Your statement that "until I see at least 99% working method of compressing NTSC DVDs" shows that. I have done over 100 NTSC DVDs keeping all extras, and I'll put my DVDs against yours anyday. Our methods have advanced quite a bit, and our quality is better now than ever.

Movie-only means a DVD with a movie-only. Menu or no menu, it's still only got a movie on it right? Maybe if we say it slower you'll understand? Moooooooovie Ooooooooonnnnnlllly....

Eyes`Only.

Let it rest... I was waiting for this thread to disappear into the archives. I've already PMed the big man, Doom9, and it was all good with his reply.

Everybody's method works and that's good enough. Let's move on and keep providing the help to others instead of arguing. Like Trilight mentioned, we don't need this place to turn into another VCDHELP.

Noticed I haven't posted anything after Trilight's last reply. So let it rest...let it rest...

2COOL, cheeze, don't let this argument distract you. I find your guides very helpful, as you intend. I find the "UBERGuide," by contrast, very difficult to understand and use, to the point of being, for my purposes, useless.

XXX GUIDE QUESTION: I followed your steps (those in the first post in this thread) and I get curious results in the final product. Played in IFOedit, with DVD Play, the behavior is as you predict: first play is essentially direct to the root menu (2 seconds of animation). When I use PowerDVD to view the same files, however, I get the longer, standard intro as in the original version (minus the original Colombia logo). This material is shown as Title 1, runs about 24 seconds, has a single button in it that takes you to the root menu, and after the second run (48 seconds total) takes you to the root menu anyway. I get the same behavior with WinDVD. Any thoughts about why the first play behavior would be different in this way, IFOedit v PowerDVD?

LOL So much for letting this thread disappear into the archives, eh?

I can get it closed, if you want. Otherwise archival might take quite a while... (n00b forum users make life hell, don't they?)
