Dual Layer Media?? -from pioneer

Quote:

http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/multime.../dvd-r_faq.htm
Q: Can I use the current model DVD Writers to write to Dual Layer DVD-R's when they become available?

A: The basic technology for Dual layer DVD-R media is still under development so it would be impossible to incorporate this ability into the current model writers as no standards or media exist yet. It could be a few years away. No one knows what will be required to write to dual layer media if and when it appears. There is no doubt that a new drive will be required to write to dual layer DVD-R's.
I thought dual layer media was not going to be possible. This certainly implies that it is very much a possibility. Anyone else have more info on this?

Why should it be impossible :?

5 years ago, you would have been said to be crazy if you'd told someone "in 5 years, there will be dvd recorders, 3 GHz CPUs, 1 GB memory pieces, graphic cards with 128 MB RAM and 200 GB hard discs..."

=> "impossible" is a word you should use very carefully...

Nothing is impossible, the bible says so. 50 years ago you never would have thought we would have Starfleet and Starships flying all over the galaxy but now we do, I've seen it on TV. Of course there will be duel layer burners, then we can all through away our DVD collections we've spent thousands on plus all the time invested so we can reburn all our DVD's again like we reburned our VCD's to SVCD and our SVCD's to DVDR. When will it ever end, sometimes I wonder if we should all just get real lives

No I meant it. It's gonna be real nice too, changing formats for the third or fourth time. I think we should all get girlfriends, it would probably be cheaper

Ok, so "impossible" is much to strong. My point was that I didnt think we would be seeing them. In fact there are tons of posts here where people ask, "when will dual layer burners be out?" and the forums has really flamed them.

So does anyone know, might we actaully see dual layer burners some time soon?

Soon: definitely No
Somewhen in the distant future: maybe...but don't forget: In some years, when blue ray discs are common, nobody needs dual layer dvd discs any longer. On the other hand, dvd+rw has been introduced although no one needs that either

I read about this before, the blue ray disks are single layer and may hold 50 gig off data. Thats ten DVD movies on one disk. They say these disks will be available in around 3 years. I imagine you would need new standalones for these disks. The blue ray or another form of large data single layer DVD will probably be the thing instead of duel layer. But it's a fact, soon 4.3 gig DVDR's will be considered a big joke. I'm already thinking there a joke because they don't hold enough.

The first generation of blue ray discs will have about 25 GB per layer, with the first ones being single layer. It will of course require new players and recorders.

The first recorders are planned to have 4x/2x speed for them, with 1x = 36 MBit/s. Of course, Toshiba has planned to design an own new format, so that the same crap as with dvd+ vs dvd- will begin again.

These burners have to get fans or some cooling device in them in the future. Burning stuff at 2X for dvds gets my burner WAYYYYYYYYYYYY too hot.

Look into the data sheet... It consumes up to 24 Watts, which is iirc twice as much as most other drives.

I've installed a cooling fan beneath the drive...
