Yamada 6600 and other general questions.
After reading reviews it seems yamada 6600 is the best buy at the moment. As it support Mpeg4 ASP.
However it seems there is still alot of problem posted here in doom9. So i would like to know what are they. 1. Subtitle. Does Yamada 6600 support it? 2. OGG support yet? ( It said avalible on firmware later.... so i am qonder if it is out or not. ) 3. I watch a lot of Anime. I heard there is a lot of problem with clips encoded in 640x480 resoloution. Has this been solved on any Divx Player. And if yes does Yamada 6600 works? 4. Does it support Unicode? So i have have some Janpaness Title Mp3 or filename will it shown up in the GUI? 5. What is new in Yamada 6700? ( it is listed on the site although i don't know if it is avablible yet ) |

It does not support full MPEG-4 ASP, 3 warp point GMC (Xvid) is missing.
And of course the other mediatek problem - packet bitstream with more than 1 bframe is not smooth. 1. Yes, but i heard it was not very good (a bit small, no outline but grey backgound behind subtitles) but wait, thats better than most other mediatek based players.... 2. No 3. No problem |

about the Yamada 6600
Seems the 6600 is a 50/50 proposition since there are many problems associated with it and the response from Yamada is weak, at best.
Do a bit more searching and you'll come to realize the above is true. All things considered, it seems the ESS based players are geting more support than any of the MediaTek...I think this is a broad problem with all the MTK players and may not be resticted only to manufacturers. I own both MTK and ESS based players and must say the every day utility of the ESS players far outshines any promised pie-in-the-sky from MTK.

I would prefer a mediatek based player, at least if you live in PAL land. ESS based cannot play AVI files with the right aspect ratio and cannot fill the screen with many resolutions with PAL.
That alone is enought for me to never buy such a player again. |

Hi Zhnujm and all!
A consideration well worth mentioning since I don't live in a PAL country. It seems the user community is doing much more with the MTK firmware than the manufacturers or designers of the MTK1389 chip and perhaps a reliable firmware will come out of that. As can be seen from my previous post, I'm not too happy with the way MediaTek and many manufacturers using the MTK1389 chip promised so much and delivered so little. I don't think it should be left to the user community to test and provide a working, reliable firmware. The lack of engaging, active support is my main concern about MTK since I don't feel they have made a good faith effort to provide timely firmware updates for their users. I don't claim to know the details of chip testing and development by MTK vs producing manufacturers. All the same, I would be hesitant to purchase another MediaTek based product in the future.

Speed, what ESS player do you use? A mate has the Medion 819. Overall his has more problems with Mpeg-IV files. Some files that work on mine don't fully work properly on his. And vice versa. But overall mine seems to have less problems with Mpeg-IV files.
However the MTK have problems with DVD-Video menus. |

You can find an firmware for 6600 with nice subtitle fonts HERE or here.
Selectable font size for subtitles, with and without background. ![]() 6700 will be released in december and will support .sub (MicroDVD subtitles) enjoy, Mtz Last edited by Mtz; 13th November 2004 at 22:24. |

Hi All!
Mr. Whippy-> I have a Philips DVP642 and I think it's got the VibrattoII chip. All around a good player for the money and active support from Philips. Mtz-> I'm aware of your work with the Yamada 6600 firmware. I've read your postings at My Yamada UK. I thank you for your support of the Yamada 6600 user community. I visit the firmware development forum at My Yamada often and I think good reliable firmware will come from that. So much has been done and moved forward by an interested user community and I applaud all your efforts! Observations on Yamada/MTK: The limited lack of support and communication received by all the users of Yamada/MTK is something I will remember when it's time to purchase my next gen Mpeg4 player. That includes the DVX6700 or whatever other model they produce. As time goes by many other chip manufacturers will offer GMC/QPEL, reliable Xvid playback and perhaps Matroska and OGG. The very poorly delivered pie-in-the-sky promises by Yamada/MTK sales copy is something my wallet will not soon forget!
