BDs sometimes use that resolution for extras (they just lift them off the DVD) -- not in Italy, though.

Aspect ratio problem

I'm having problems backing up 2 out of 3 movies from my Aliens triple pack. Aliens (2nd movie) encodes fine and maintains a proper aspect ratio and displays in widescreen. For some reason no matter what settings i check/uncheck in setup alien and alien 3 come out with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The weird thing is that if i encode just a snip of the movie, it encodes and comes out properly at 16:9 with letterboxing. But if i run the whole movie through it seems like it's disreguarding any of the info I pass even if I try tossing a custom AVS at it.

I'm rather baffled at this point. Are the anamorphic properties throwing it off somewhere during the encode? Is it just improperly reading and then setting the tag for the aspect ratio?

Below are two image examples of what I mean. First one is the original, second one is the re-code.

Let me know what addition info you may need on this one.

*edit it says the attachements are pending approval so im not sure if you can see them to grab them.

Can you post the log from the job that is having issues? Also, please post your BDREBUILDER.INI contents so I can see your settings.

MPEG-2... 720x480? Sorry -- but that isn't an original disc. I have no idea how it has been screwed in the preprocessing and I can't help you.

Alien Triple Pack is a DVD box set which would explain the MPEG-2 720x480 and the 4.5GB input size.
Alien Anthology is the Blu-ray version.

If you own the original disc, yes.
But jdobbs does not support processed sources. Usually the third party software introduces the bug, and is not the fault of BD-RB.

You "restructured". That is preprocessing. I'm guessing that you used multiAVCHD to convert a DVD to BDMV format. The problem is that sometimes multiAVCHD sets the aspect ratio wrong in the CLPI of its output (I've had it happen to me). So when BD-RB reads it -- it is already incorrect.

In other words -- the problem is there before BD-RB even reads it -- and it is not a bug.

This is what I mean by "preprocessing" -- when you are working with anything other than an original BD, I cannot respond to bug reports because I never know what has happened to the source before it gets to BD-RB.

Nope. Just used TsMuxer to toss it into a bd-structure. But totally understandable, it may well be TsMuxer's fault. Again thanks for the replies.

I ripped "Dinner for Schmucks" using AnyDVD Ripper. Everytime I run BDR on it I get the following error:

AFTEN fails and I get a windows XP message that the program must be closed.

Try to open up that AVS with either Media Player Classic or WMP and see what kind of error you might get.

Not to belittle anyone here... jdobbs, you have the patience of Job.

Thanks for putting up with all of us, and sticking with the development of this program. I actually like following this thread now, because it helps me take a good long look at things when the poop hits the fan!

On that note, one quick question (hehe): I was backing up a multi-episode anime disc last night, and it hung in pass 1 of 1 while reencoding with this error:
"Error in attempt to extract audio/subs" (this was VID_00039)

To which I replied: F. Then I just shut down the machine to deal with it later.

So I turned my system back on today and just started again, doing a continuation of the backup. Phase one started at VID_00040. Does this mean it has skipped VID_00039, then? Should I have just started over from scratch?

As an addendum to the first post in this thread, as we're now up to 500+ pages, could you put a small "troubleshooting" item at the end of that first post? Like, "Run INSPECT.EXE, post results, as well as blahblahblah.log files located here and here"? I know one of these many pages I've read has what you've suggested we need to post. I think it may help us to help you if we knew exactly what you'd like us to post, and it would be obvious to have it there.

Just a thought. I'll wait for your response before digging up all of the log files for the above issue. Note that I haven't played back the finished backup, as it's still under way.

@torque2k;
if you look inside the Workfiles folder, you can see if there is a VID_00039.avs.264 file. If so, see if there is a 00039.m2ts file in the completed BDMV/Streams folder.
If not, see if there is a VID_00039.avs file created. If so, see if you can open that file with MPC.

Aw, crud! I have the option "Remove workfiles after rebuild" checked, and I just read your message AFTER the end of the rebuild. Well, I'll have to play back VID_00039.m2ts from the rebuild tomorrow to see if the audio is there and in sync (yes, it exists). Size is about right, but we'll see.

Thanks much!

I assume that is the 00026 file under BDMV/STREAM which it's trying to separate the video and audio and work with each.

Anyway WMP (ver 9) says that it doesn't recognize the file extension but might play it anyway which it does. I did an open with using "media player" (which I assume is classic media player) and it says "cannot determine device type from the given filename extension".

Nero Showtime plays it too.

Any ideas. Thanks!

It's this file (which is located in the working folder "WORKFILES"):

AUD_00026__4352.AVS

That's the one your log references in the error message. If it is good it should play back the audio (only).

Media Player Classic is included with BD Rebuilder. You can find it in the BD-RB folder under "TOOLS\MPC"

Blu-rays authored with TMPgenc Authoring Works 4

I have a number of selections I have authored with TMPgenc Authoring Works 4 (football games, actually) where I have created menus to select by quarters. When I compress them with BD_Rebuilder the menus no longer function. The m2ts files are compressed fine, however, (along with the menu file which is also m2ts).

TMPgenc reencodes all the original video to AVC.

The original plays fine with TMT3, but the reduced copy does not.

Is it your intention to make bd_rb work with selections not authored by the movie houses? If not, I understand.

One thing I did notice when comparing the before and after with BDedit is that the .clpi file for the BD-RB output is missing the IG stream. I believe this has the menu items.

Nope... my intent is to make it work with anything that complies with the BD standard. You are referring to what I believe is a known issue (which happens, but not often). It is likely that TMPEGEnc Authoring Works created the menu with the IGS in-mux. That's pretty rare on commercial discs. Currently TSMUXER does not handle IGS streams. I am working on a "remuxing" algorithm that will retrieve the IGS from the original and reintegrate it into the TSMUXER output. I was hoping to have this completed for the next release -- but honestly it isn't going very well, so I don't know if it will be there yet.
