Most laptop CD drives require you to support the drive when inserting a CD, that is, one hand clicking the CD onto the spindle, the other underneath the platter holder support it. Otherwise, the rails that hold the platter bend, and the drive never closes properly and eventually fails to spin CDs or starts scratching them. I doubt it can be fixed, although it can be replaced at an exorbitant price (at least this is true for most manufacturers). If it works, support the drive when inserting a CD so that the problem doesn't get worse. This is probably in the fine print of the manual, but not in the quickstart guide.
