more than "standard" encoding?? we still have the same number of blocks. how bad can it get?
Hm I'll run a test and see.. but I would think the additional vertical frequency energy created by "de-interlacing" blocks which didn't exhibit any interlacing artifacts, will blow out the coefficients. Might get compensated for by vertical prediction if we do every block... should be interesting.
All the field-DCT actually does is, instead of sending lines 0 through 7 and 8 through 15 to fdct(), even lines 0 through 14 and odd lines 1 through 15 are sent instead. If the fields aren't exhibiting interlacing artifacts, we'll actually be creating vertical complexity instead of removing it.
