laplace is equivalent to "1 1 1 1 -8 1 1 1 1 8", while "1 1 1 1 -8 1 1 1 1" gets interpreted as "1 1 1 1 -8 1 1 1 1 16". The same applies to sobel ("0 -1 0 -1 0 1 0 1 0 2" and robert ("0 0 0 0 2 -1 0 -1 0 2").
