Without ever having tried it - I do think it is possible, that, at least for many discs, the original BD+ code in BD-J still diligently processing the non-existing BD+ causes no real harm, as it may simply stall.
Not a clean solution, but if it works for you, I don't see a real drawback.

But I know that there are a handful of even older discs where the BDJO-"trick" won't work, because the loading works differently. A Russian version of "Dragonball Evolution" comes to mind, but I doubt, you'll be troubled by that
