You don't need intermediate wav files if you 'pipe' the wavi stdout to stdin aften encoder:

wavi x.avs - | aften - x.ac3

Thanks, obviously much simpler.

I looked at the docs for ffmpeg and couldn't see if it accepted std input, though there probably is a way.
