I just never thought it was a very good idea, something I carried over from CDRs. On a CDR the chemicals in the ink can disolve the reflective layer, but DVDs don't expose that layer to the air.
I write on the surface only if it has been printed on, that's a good sign that the disk won't be affected by ink. Otherwise I stick to the hub, very safe.
