DivX4 Q&A

Q: What is the different between DivX4 and DivX3 / DivX ;-)?

A: DivX4 is a new MPEG-4 codec developed from scratch by DivXNetworks: http://www.divx.com/. It offers different encoding modes like quality based and 2 pass encoding and it can play back the old DivX3 files.

Q: I'm doing 2 pass encoding and the final filesize is off target. What can I do?

A: Unfortunately not much. DivX4 can be very accurate in some cases and completely off target in other cases (especially 2 CD rips). Using DivX4log: http://divx4log.narod.ru/ may improve the situation but it also complicates the encoding process.

Q: What program should I use to encode to DivX4?

A: VirtualDub. VirtualDub is being used to encode when you use GKnot which is the best working solution for DivX4 encoding. FlaskMpeg / Xmpeg often has problems and is therefore not suggested.$

Q: Where can I find DivX4 guides?

A: Here: http://www.doom9.org/divx4-guides.htm

Q: Can I use Nandub to encode to DivX4?

A: No.

Q: Why are there big blocks in dark scenes?

A: One problem of video encoders is that
absolute error measure is used (for speed reasons), so it to the encoder it doesn't matter if a brightness value of 200 turns into 201, or a value of 1 turns into 2. In both cases the error is 1.

However, the eye reacts to relative difference, not absolut (so once the brightness is doubled, once it's only change by a factor of 1.005), so it's more likely that you will see errors at dark spots.

Q: How can I split a DivX4 movie?

A: http://www.doom9.org/virtualdub_proc....htm#Splitting

Q: Can I use ABR/VBR MP3 audio?

A: Sure. Follow the DivX4 guides (http://www.doom9.org/divx4-guides.htm) , they will tell you how to do it.

Q: I've heard about DivX 4.5 / DivX 5.0. When will they be released?

A: When it's done. There's no ETA.

Q: How to process noisy movies?

A: Use temporal smoother. GKnot offers several options for noisy movies so GKnot is the easiest way to go.

Q: How to improve compressability of a movie?

A: temporal smoother again. For more info refer to this thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.ph...=temp+smoother
