The name of the option was changed because people thought, like you did, that it was an HDR to SDR conversion, so that what they were seeing was SDR, not HDR.
HDR Tonemapping makes it clearer that you're still watching HDR, simply that the tonemapping happens in the source (madVR HTPC) rather than in the VP or display/projector.
That change in name happened before the latest public build. Maybe the build you had installed previously was older than that.
In any case, no option was removed in the last public build.
