This doesn't appear to be an issue with the image but rather a case of how the subtitles are on the disc. Unfortunately, Avatar has forced subtitles, so without them some scenes won't make sense. This was originally reported in 2013 but appears to still be a problem. The bug that refers to this is
http://bugs.madshi.net/view.php?id=87 but I was hoping that there was a workaround for the time being.
