Hi, you can also extract the sub-pictures from the original DVD using PgcDemux and author with Muxman or ReJig, then use PgcEdit if planning to reinsert the original menus or simply editing. If using another authoring program which doesn’t accept SUPs, extract the sub-pictures with VSRip and output with SubreSync (from VobSub) to a compatible format. Note, VSRip also automatically saves only the Closed Captions in SRT files named with formats such as utf8, utf16be, utf16le, and etc… AFAIK they’re all the same captions. It's why blutach mentioned DVD Rebuilder, it simply saves time.
