View Full Version : Redo part of an encoding job while retaining the rest

I just used DVD-RB to do a backup where I've eliminated most, but not all, of the extras with PGCedit. All was fine, except that I'd set DVD-RB to "Steal Space from Extras" and "Half-D1 and Half Space for Extras," something that I normally do, but didn't mean to do in this case. The extras are a tiny fraction of the full project, maybe 2 or 3 percent at most.
So I'd like to rebuild the extras, but retain the main movie itself. Using HC, the whole affair took about five hours, so I don't want to have to do it all over again just for a few minutes of extras.
Is there a way I can reencode the extras without touching what's already been done with the main movie?

I just realized that if I reencode the extras, but not the main movie, that the overall size of the project might exceed the capacity of a DVD-5. Still, I'd like to know if what I'm asking can be done.

not really. If you have room to spare, and still have the project and working directory, its easy. Copy the m2v and flg files in the working directory for the main movie, rerun the project without steal space checked, changing the progress so avoid reencoding the movie (search forum for how to do that). then paste the old m2vs into the new working directory and rebuild.

Or reencode the extras yourself, outside of DVD-RB, and fit them back into the DVD using the Replace button in VobBlanker.

That makes sense, manono. I'm kind of a newbie, so I have a question about that. What state do the extras have to be in in order to use the Replace button in VobBlanker? The HC Encoder output would be fine or I need to make .VOBs and such?
jptheripper, I can do searches with the best, but in this case, I don't even know what to search for. Any suggestions?

maybe you can use RB-Keeper (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=24).

Hi-
...or I need to make .VOBs and such?
Yes, you have to author the extra(s) as DVD(s) using MuxMan or some such.

Thanks, everyone. I'll look into these things.

I've never tried it but you should be able to do it. The encode phase is controlled by the contents of REBUILDER.ECL (even when you aren't using CCE). You could edit the REBUILDER.ECL file and remove everything except the parts you want to recode, change the bitrates, and then run the encode phase. When it asks you whether to continue from the last encode, say "No" -- it should just reencode the ones you let remain in the ECL. Then just rebuild and it will use the new files as well as the (other) ones done during the first encode sequence.
If you decide to try it, let me now how it comes out.

Thanks, jdobbs. I'm happy to be able to help.
I haven't rebuilt yet, but everything up to that point seems to have worked.
Just to make sure, the values I should change should be those in the [item] sections that follow and not necessarily any others?

The only thing you should have to change would be:
vbr_brate_avg=4214
or if you are using one pass mode:
opv_q_factor=
