I have a copy of 'Identity' (2003), which is region 2 (the disc cover has symbols for regions 2 and 5 on it). I have tried to compress the movie using dvdshrink combined with dvd43 but it fails saying cyclic redundancy check (though the disc is clean). Dvddecrypter and Vobblanker have failed also. Does anyone out there have any suggestions to rip this disc?

This is a DVD with "ARccOS" copy protection, that DVD Shrink cannot resolve.

Use DVD Decrypter v.3.54 to "rip" the DVD to your hard drive in "File" mode - and from the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "All files" (NOT "movie files").

Then use DVD Shrink v.3.2xxx to "Open files" (NOT "Open Disk")

If that doesn't do the trick, try using DVDFab Decrypter or (Commercial) DVD2One instead of DVD Decrypter.

A somewhat time-consuming and tedious alternative would be to use the kludge method of creating a "PSL" file for use with the now-discontinued DVD Decrypter v.3.54. The following instructions for doing this were found at another forum:

"How to create a PSL file for a problematic DVD

Why the need of PSL files for DVD Decrypter?

Not the brightest explanation but:

There are some sectors on your DVD that DVD Decrypter ver 3.5.4.0 can't read due to the fact that the original DVD have a form of copy protection using unreadable sectors that will show up as CRC errors (=read errors - your reader/burner can't read the sectors).
To get those sectors over to your hard disk - they are replaced with dummies (empty sectors/space). The PSL file tells DVD Decrypter where to insert those dummies.
If you play your original disc - your player will not notice those "can't read sectors" because the references in the IFOs makes the player to not use those sectors.
Normally the the next released version of DVD Decrypter used to have the earlier created PSL files included in the software and you didn't needed to use this work-around with manually load the PSL2 files in to DVD Decrypter for older DVDs.

The program is not updated any more and therefore the library of PSL files are bound to grow.
How to create a new PSL file:

1) Change the setting to ignore read errors and also set read error retries to zero.
2) Rip the DVD.
3) Save the log list.
4) Export the PSL file and save it.
5) Open up the PSL file in a text editor and keep the first row starting with '0:'.
6) The row that start with '1:' - insert the range that was reported in the log file as 'Failed to read sector'. Delete the rest of the rows.
7) Save the PSL file.
8) Import the PSL file you have edited.
9) Rip the DVD.
