If anyone's looking to encode x264 with a native GUI, recent versions of avidemux add support for this encoder. Although few of x264's settings have been implemented so far, this is one of the first native x264 GUI's I'm aware of. I'm using 2.0.42 and it works well with x264 SVN.

What is x264 and why would I want to use it? I've not actually come across this one before :)

Thanks in advance.

The used quantizer in the picture is a little bit low. To bad, avidemux only support avi and ogm. Hmm, the settings show two B-frames.

What about 0 and 51 in quantizers?

I've done some research on it now, but how does it perform against standard Xvid encoding? I can't seem to find any real comparisons anywhere.

x264 is an MPEG-4 AVC codec, just like Nero AVC. There's a whole subforum devoted to MPEG-4 AVC: http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=17

Quality is always a contested, debatable topic and x264 is under rapid development. ATM I would use AVC (as x264) only if I needed stronger compression than what XviD (with all advanced features, h.263 quantization) delivers at constant quantizer = 4.
