When I rip any DVD in either IFO or ISO mode, the playback quality of the sound is complete garabe. I can only hear sound out the front middle speaker (I have 5.1 on my computer) and I have to turn the sound on my speakers very loud to be able to hear. What am I missing?

Have you tried upgrading your audio drivers?

1) Are you possibly trying to playback a DTS audiostream?

2) What software DVD player are you using?

3) If you playback the original DVD on your PC, do you have the same problem?

My audio drivers are up-to-date.

1) I'm not sure what you mean by that?
2) PowerDVD
3) No

When you ripped it is in 5.1 or DTS (need special set up) - open it up in shrink that will tell you which sound track

I'm not sure if it's 5.1 or DTS. I don't have shrink, let me d/led it and find out. This might be another stupid question, but how do you pick between 5.1 and DTS?

I just used DVDShrink and it says AC3 5.1.

I just used DVDShrink and it says AC3 5.1.By default installation, DVD Shrink will only show AC3 and LPCM tracks. If you want to see your DTS, you must change your preference setting.

Go to Edit > Preferences... > Stream Selection tab > Select "All Types" in Audio language and coding types.

@rymaples

Try the following:

Use PowerDVD to "Play as DVD" (NOT simply play individual .VOBs) - and from either the DVD onscreen menu ("Setup" or "Languages") or from PowerDVDs menu, select a different audiostream.

Maybe I'm just doing this completely wrong, wouldn't put it past me. What are the correct steps to take a movie off of a dvd and put them on my harddrive? I want the best possible quality. I'm not worried about file size because I don't plan on burning them to a disc. All I've done was use DVD Decrypter in both ISO and IFO mode and left all the settings default. Could I get a complete step by step? The FAQ isn't all that helpful.

@rymaples

Have you as yet tried my suggestion to:

Use PowerDVD to "Play as DVD" (NOT simply play individual .VOBs) - and from either the DVD onscreen menu ("Setup" or "Languages") or from PowerDVD's menu, select a different audiostream.

?

Ripping with DVD Decrypter should not in any way affect the audio playback...

I tried that setarip_old and the sound is the same. This is really starting to annoy me because I'm usually pretty good with computers.

Is there anything else I can check?

Do you have AC3 filter installed? You'll have an icon for it under Control Panel if you do.

Yes I do.

I give you permission to ban me for life from this forum. In PowerDVD, there's a sound setting for quiet, normal, or loud enviornments. It was set to quiet. I set it to loud and the sound is like it's suppose to be. I'm sorry. Thanks to all you guys that took your time to try and help me. It's much appreciated.

@rymaples

Glad to hear you've solved your dilemma!

However, I'm curious to know how this setting DID NOT affect your playback of ORIGINAL DVDs on your PC as well?

It's probably one of those questions that you really don't want to find the answer to. lol

Actually, I'd very much like to know the answer, because I'm baffled by the apparent contradiction - and the answer would be beneficial to others who may be confronted with a similar situation. So, if it's not too much trouble, please be good enough...

I have no idea why it did that but if you want me to try something, just ask. You guys took the time to help me out, so I have absolutely no problem repaying ya.
