View Full Version : ProCoder question regarding interlacing

I'm somewhat confused. I always thought that the lower/bottom field was for digital video capture and upper field was for analog capture. I captured betamax analog video onto a mini Canon digial camcorder using Pinnacle studio, made edits added titles and transitions and then saved as an avi file. I want to encode it as a MPeg dvd ntsc so that I can author & burn to DVD. Using Procoder..I add the source & it indicates that the interlacing is lower field first. Then when I go to add the target, the interlacing shows upper/top field first. I always thought that both source & target should be the same..? Am I correct? Should I change the target to read the same as the source (lower field first)? Why does Procoder switch the interlacing between target & source? Is there something that I am not aware of? Thanks for your help. As my avi file is 10.7 gb, I don't want to encode using wrong fields only to have to re-do it. Thanks for your help!

I've had Procoder show TFF when it really was BFF. If you open your file in GSPOT , it should accurately tell you.

On DVD TFF is more common.
So Procoder shifts the picture one line up and changes the fieldorder from BFF to TFF.

Am I correct in that both source & target should be the same? Do you recommend LFF for dv and UFF for analog?

If you capture from DV the avi will be bottom field first (DV via firewire does only a copy).
Analog capture depends on your capture card - most of them are top field first.
For DVD TFF is common, this is why the DVD Procoder Template does reverse the fieldorder (Movie will not be jerky because picture is shifted up one line). But you can change without problems.
