View Full Version : Waiting for a new GKnot

Hi!

First of all, I'd like to ask GKnot developers about news. I've read here, that nowadays, you preferred AutoGK, and didn't spend much time with a new GKnot.
But, everyone knows, that the 0.35 cannot handle DivX6, nor Helium, and that's not too useful. Maybe, not the biggest problem in our (GKnot users) life, but a little bit disappointed.
None of the threads, posts were about dates.
So my question is: ABOUT when? Not exactly, not perfectly correct, so on. Is there a project in progress, or not? If not, will be or not?
Thank you for your answere.

download delphi, download the source code and lay hands on it by yourself. If you do so, I have a few pointers for you (not Delphi pointers, but about how to approach the solution). Then you can tell us when it's done. It is not fair to pressure len0x in any kind, he doesn't owe anybody anything. Being both user and developer of freeware tools I see the situation from both sides, and there's one key point to never forget: free means no obligations. The author isn't obligated to do anything at all for you.. he can ignore you all he wants and that's perfectly okay.. it's his choice to bother to reply, to make a tool, to provide support, to continue to develop, etc. Plus, it's not exactly true that it doesn't work, it just requires some more work but it's perfectly possible to use DivX6 and Helium within GKnot.. there's even a guide for it. And len0x has previously explained why at this point he won't change GKnot.

It's broke because DXN decided to use a new reg key for each build and encrypt the settings to a command-line. It means if somebody will fix it, it will break on every new build again, great idea by DXN, ain't it? Some goes for DVX and successor (I'm making progress).

@Shorlex:
I think doom has explained it quite well. The source is available, so go out an play.

Honestly I think GKnot is pretty much dead unless we see h.264 codecs rising again. While I´ve been an avid GKnot user in the past, I rarely use it now since DVD burners and medias have gotten soooo cheapo.

No need to squeeze a movie to a CD-R anymore. Put two or three of them in standard MPEG2 to a DVD-R and there you go....

Just my 2 cents...

I guess the whole "low compression" stuff will see a renaisance again once HDTV and h.264 (or similar codecs) will get more important.

For any developer just keeping up the challenge with new codecs (= new implementations) is really a pain in the a..., er, neck and a pure waste of resources.

@stax:
I guess anyone should just stay away from DXN. There are many options for low compression codecs. XVid at first. Not to speak about ffMPEG or using the windows version of MPlayer for encoding. Why should someone care about "payware" ? Hm ? To me DXN is dead. Not matter what they do. Just think about all this DivX "compatibility" fuss.

Sincerely,
D$

Pressure? To exact? Obligations? Who told you these?
Was only a small question. If there is a development or not. So. No more, no less.
"Waiting for a new GKnot" - as I started didn't meant anything written in the first row. Like you are waiting for your dreamgirl. That is not an obligation (who is on the other side - life?), only a marvellous feeling, when you meet her. : )
"He can ignore you all he wants..." - yes he can. And you can indite much more fair spoken. All you wants.

they are quite popular so I like to support it in my application. I'm not exactly sure it's payware, ain't it free now even with the b-frames feature? Their business stragegy is not very transparent or maybe I'm too slow. I must admit I'm regularly annoyed by them and I was already at a state where I said it's enough. (because of e.g. adding adware or telling my trial period is finished after a month when it was proposed to work six month, breaking compatibility with DVX and GK again and again, things like that)
