View Full Version : Sound Out of Sync-Cutting VOB Files

My first post. Really impressed with Auto GK. After screwing around with the Divx products website for a month, and never getting them to do what I want, or even work, I found this website. Auto GK, and xvid work great, and work at a level where I dont have to be an expert, or spend alot of time experimenting with settings.
But now, a hollywood update. Hollywood appears to be resisting compression programs like autogk by appending additional footage in front of the main movie that misguides the compression giving poor picture quality, and out of sync sound.
Is there a way of defeating this? Is there a program that can cut the offending front end footage from the main movie before encoding? While at it, even though autogks credits reduced quality feature is neat, can we cut off the credits all together too using the same tool?
Or is there something I can set in Autogk that all ready takes care of this problem that I dont know about.
While asking for the moon, is there a way to set autogk to add the second director's commentary at a reduced mp3 rate like 48 rather than the full 128. In other words, audio track 1 at full stereo 128, and track 2 at mono 48 or less.
I believe in paying for programs that are mature, do what I want, and can be relied upon so I would be happy to send some paypal dollars for this development. I recall sending a few dollars to the original gknot project, and I wouldnt mind doing so again. Just a little incentive there.

Compression is done across the length of the movie and not based on whatever the codec sees first. But yes, studio logos/intros in the front have known to cause A/V desync in AutoGK. Most of the times the logo comes as a separate chapter in your movie PGC which can be deselected while ripping the DVD to the hard disk. This (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=90039) thread can help you a bit on that. Also if there is such an intro, the codec will waste a lot of bits trying to compress it too. If you must cut, use this (http://www.digital-miner.com/software/chopperxp.zip).

afaik, this can't be done. At least, I don't see where we can specify a different setting for audio #2 (would be a desirable feature to have in the tool and won't be difficult to do too).
A roundabout way to achieve this:
Run DGIndex and demux the director's commentary track (audio#2)
Use BeSweet to convert audio#2 AC3--> audio#2 mono mp3 48 kbps
Check the resulting filesize (say ~50 MB)
Use AutoGK to encode video+audio#1 with target size as ~1345 MB (few megs are needed for muxing in the transcoded audio#2, for exact overhead use a Bitrate Calc)
When the encode is done, mux the mp3 audio#2 into the finished avi using VirtualDubMoD or AVI-Mux GUI to get ~1400 MB video+audio#1+audio#2 (remember you'd have to split the final file yourself if you want CD-sized files).

If you're ever up for a bit of learning, you might take a look at the full GordianKnot. With DGIndex you can trim beginning and end from a movie neatly and easily. The final settings made before encoding are for audio, and you can set each audio track individually for quality. I never did like AutoGK, too heavy on the "auto" for me.

You may want to ensure you're using DVDD in IFO mode, per the AGK tutorial and guide. In the default File mode, the VOBs may contain multiple PGCs, causing this sort of grief.

Thanks for the replys, and tips. Working with The Aviator here. Chopper XP was able to cut off the premovie footage, and the resulting xvid compresson worked perfectly. Picture, and sound are excellent.
Chopper could not cut off the credits though so used GK's reduced quality credits feature. Chopper would only work in manual mode, and could not find the right place to cut off the credits. Used Power DVD, and the preview software in GK to set times but Chopper kept ending the movie early. I suppose trial and error could have eventually found the right entries, but just went with the credits feature on GK.
Next time, will try DGIndex for this.
Thanks for the help, The Aviator is safely archived in my CDR library.

How to use DGIndex to edit vob files as suggested above?
Read the users manual on neutron's site but doesnt explain how to do this. At least clearly enough for me to understand how. Played with the controls but still clueless.
How do you use DGIndex to edit vob files?

You can't edit the files using DGIndex. You can mark start and end points of an an MPEG video stream (e.g: mpg, m2v, mpv, tp, ts etc) and then index just that portion. If you don't know the functionality and use of DGIndex, then read this (http://neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/DGIndexManual.html#WhatIsDGIndex). And also the other contents in the same page.
