my following question is how do i se how many passes and avg bitrate is on the dvd in general ?

since you were using a TRIAL version of cce there is no other way than buying it

~$58 iirc for the basic

i'd much rather use HANK315 encoder (HC ENC) if i were you - freeware and awesome quality

ok thx ... how about the passes and bitrate then ?

HC always makes two passes

concerning the bitrate: rb takes care of bitrate distribution in the segments
thus there is no need for an average value

ok thanx ...

is there a app you can check that stuff with ?

the rb-opt tool (in this forum) will show you bitrates for each segment and let you tweak them

got another question ... more passes longer to encode ?

In CCE each pass takes the same amount of time -- so 5 passes is 5 times longer than one. In HC the second pass is about 25% faster than the first one (at least on my system).

if there is more passes does it take more space or ?

the size will change slightly each pass.. but by very small amounts.. the extra passes are supposed to be purely for quality improvement not size reduction.

I've heard that on the internet there can be found a liitle programm called cce_patcher, which removes the logo and makes a trial much like a full fuctional CCE with ELCCCE , but I don't know if it's legal to use. I don't use it, but I've heard of people using it.
I in fact bought CCE basic for $59 and after that the full version.
With already up to 2000 DVD's I didn't consider it a waste of money.

(Consider all the posting about CCE 2.66 e.d, I don't think they all payed 1.995$ for it :) )

Here in the nederlands it's LEGAL to copy any DVD you lay youre hands on, strict for personal use. So you even don't have to own it. We pay our rights on empty media, so it's 'free' to copy anything you want.

I also consider CCE the best encoder, but have to try HC.
Maybe then I'll be sorry for my money spended on CCE

But CCE is fully assembly language programmed and I expect it to have the highest quality/speed ratio.

If you own DVD-RB-PRO (only $10 to JDOBBS, it's really nothing conecerning to quality and usefullness of the programm, and you get all the updates bij email automatically with personalized key-file) you can use build in Matrices with DVD-RB-PRO and CCE to improve quality for example on low bitrate material.

I use CCE for a long time, and still finds its speed and quality superiour to what I've seen (just not tried HC !).

With CCE and DVD-RB-PRO I can compress large DVD's to good quality even using low-bitrates. Examination of the compressed DVD on a high defintion PIXEL PLUS 81 Cm 16:9 tv and using PAUSE and SLOW FORWARD/REVERSE I even can't see any 'blocked' effects in demanding scenes, which I even see on my DIGITAL CABLE connection !!!

On overall quality I consider the CCE encoder very very good.

Concerning the bitrate there is a handy programm for free to look at the bitrates of VOB files.

You can use it before and after DVD-RB-(pro).

It's calle BITRATEVIEWER and can be found and downloaded at

Hope this helps

I highly recommend CCE Basic. The amount of work they've put into it, and the quality you get from CCE is deserving of the $58 investment. HC is also a fantastic encoder -- but it takes about twice as long to encode on my computer, and I'm running multiple jobs every day (testing, testing, testing). If you only occasionally encode a DVD -- HC is a good choice.

and then set the passes ?

yes and no

cce basic for example and hc do 2 passes; more is not possible (and hardly needed)

DVD-5 and DVD-9: see the DVD FAQ: http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#3.3

I'm not sure if you can prepare the dvd and then set the passes, because I've never tried it. There isn't too much of a point. Set it to 2 or 3 passes. Just remember that anything more than 3 passes with CCE is just processor masturbation. I just do 3 passes every time.
