A program to convert vobs to divx?

I have some homemade dvds I'd like to convert to divx (best compression w/ best quality). Some of these dvds have bad dvd files so I'd like to convert the vobs only without converting the entire dvd. What's a program to do this?

to convert a vob to an avi I'd use Virtualdub mpeg2
