I read the news that Dr Divx 2.0 will be Open Source , will be released under the LGPL license.
This is the website of Dr DivX 2.0 :
http://expandinglimits.com/drdivx
There are no builds available to download yet but it was announced Linux , Windows and Mac OS versions of Dr DivX. 2.0.
I can't wait to make backups of my DVDs from Linux and then see in my Hardware DivX.

is this official, or just some open source free project?
JuanCC

I think is official , if you see in Welcome to Dr. DivX 2.0 section :
I’ve got big plans for new features and I’d love to get some help from the open source community in implementing them. If you are interested in being a part of this effort, let us know. There will be more information to come as we get the project and this website set up.
If you click in let us know, you get an official email of divx.com , to thekid member.

I think is official , if you see in Welcome to Dr. DivX 2.0 section :
The new Divx Encoder is evidence DivxNetworks doesn't want to hassle too much with encoder applications, so open source Dr Divx 2 is a natural course for DivxNetworks to choose. Open Source will also help them win back some of the community goodwill they lost with out-of-season April Fool's joke, the Divx Encoder.

Indeed....
I wonder whether Dr DivX 2.0 will be able to offer WMV9 to DivX transcoding, like previous versions.... Did I say this out-loud?

I have no words about their statements : "Divx provides a high compression 7-10!! times smaller than MPEG2". Even AVC/H.264 High Profile can't do that. In fact only twice as maximum for MPEG4 - ASP.
Lie, lie and LIE!!! Without stoping!!!

I don't agree with that opinion.Even I can, without problem, compress MPEG2 video(4.3 GB,movie 1 hours and 56 minutes) to 700 MB in two pass with DivX,Xvid or x264 codec.
And,that's about 5 times smaller then original source.

I use q4 XviD for reference : 900 Kbps for all codec
I encode with the best codec aka NDAVC HP with this bitrate
For the same quality (objective) I use 1350 Kbps with the best MPEG2 MP@ML encoder with the same resolution
1) Even NDAVC HP is not twice better than the best MPEG2 encoder for this real example ...
2) you can't compare divx (generaly 640*272) resolution with DVD resolution (generaly 720*576). If you want make that use 720*576 for DivX too
Kostarum Rex Persia

Well, that depends on settings in the codec.I always use ultra quality and VHQ modes in Xvid 1.1 beta2 codec. My resolution is 640x480 and the video looks very very good, on 850 kbps.

American is person who live in America. (From north of Canada untill Argentina and Chile (Patagonic region) ).It's not correct to call one nation by continent name.
Imagine if only Germans will be called european. Or chineses are only asians.

You need to fix the License - right now the software is supposedly not usable unless you live in the past ;)
LIMITED DURATION: The License to this product is of limited duration and shall expire on March 30, 2005. After such date, this product will not be usable and its features will be unavailable to you.

#1 in the plans, just not enabled yet
#2 what do you mean here? You can send the job to encode without waiting for long analysis. you just can't go into the advanced settings.
#3 in the plans, just not enabled yet

edit: also there is a bug in the long analysis where its decoding every frame and thus making the analysis much longer than it will be when that bug is fixed.

when encoding vob files with more than 1 audio track the first audio track gets a distorted pitch kind of like a reduction of 30% on the dialogue speed.
why do we still need ac3 filter? Autogk, avi.net and StaxRip to name a few dont need it. why doesnt the dr just extract to wav, normalize it and then convert it to mp3?
robU*4
1st December 2005, 17:31
How would you extract to WAV without an AC3 filter ?
They probably use their own AC3 decoder or a GPL one. We don't have any of these. The AC3 and AAC decoders in FFMPEG are GPL and thus can't be used by DrDivX as it's LGPL.
BuzMack
5th December 2005, 22:58
Gordian Knot uses DGMPGDec (DGIndex) to extract the audio streams... and this tool is GPL, not LGPL, and hence can't be used by DrDivx.
Well, not directly anyhow.

Has anyone actually gotten DrDivX to encode anything? It just crashes for me at almost any instant:
Source various PAL DV avis (with and without sound) ~ 10s long
System: XP 2600+ / 786MB RAM / XP SP2 / nForce2
Tried:
- Wizard Mode: closes at last step, though the job is added when I call up the Dr. DivX Batch Encode Queue, it will however crash after a few seconds.
- Expert Mode: crashes when trying to browse for input files
Crash: just disappears or leaves a message like this:

Still the expert mode should at least allow me to select a file or browse the folders..?
thekid
5th December 2005, 23:58
yes it should let you browse folders and such
do you have any jobs in your job folder? IF so, its trying to encode that "bad" job while you are trying to browse folders and such and that same bad job is causeing the crash. just empty out hte jobs folder
also see this thread on the DV file issue (http://forums.divx.com/groupee/forums?a=tpc&s=782106&f=931101651&m=594100262&r=498101262#498101262)

Cleared the jobs folder - Expert mode working again.
As for the source of the problem it seems that its somehow related to profiles etc.
When choosing my crash avi file in expert mode with no changes to the default settings it will crash during encoding. When I change from "Home Theater" to "High Definition" it will encode all the way through.
thekid
6th December 2005, 00:37
that is truly odd
it works for HD and Portable but not for Home Theater (there is already a bug with handheld so i didn't try it)
i'll add this info to the bug submitted for this (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1371344&group_id=145411&atid=761876)

I checked your file. It fails here too. The reason is that the DivX encoder doesn't like the resolution. If you use Advanced mode to change the resolution and save to a profile, it will work. We're investigating why the encoder fails (maybe the resolution is too big for the profile ?)
About not being able to use the Expert or Batch when you start it, it will be fixed in the next build. The jobs won't start automatically on startup.

Ok good to hear its not my PC.
Another oddity, adding subtitles / audio tracks seems to not work at all - only embedded streams in the source file get encoded, pressing the add button does nothing.
A bug or just not implemented (I dont see it mentioned anywhere in the FAQ or so)?

The problem I'm finding so far is that Balanced quality isn't really showing off the DIVX codec very well. Either slow the encoding speed of Balanced down a bit to allow 10% better quality or introduce a new standard setting.
When people first come to the product that's the stetting they are likely to test first, and if it doesn't produce the results, it's sayonara.
It's shaping up to be a very good app, but that's my major quibble with it at this stage. Just my $5 worth.
thekid
12th December 2005, 19:24
so does the "better" mode meed your quality requirements?
thekid..
Slitheen
12th December 2005, 19:28
It does indeed. But how many will use it considering the large encoding speed leap from Balanced?
I edited my post above, to include "It's shaping up very nicely", as an app. Just to show my overall likeness. :)
