View Full Version : (apparently) random poor quality encodes

Hi all. Troubleshooting type question for you that I haven't found answered anywhere. Generally I use the settings suggested here in the Xvid FAQ here to do backups, and usually end up with decent looking "soft" images w/ little or no blocking.

My problem is that recently everything has gone to pot. By that I mean, suddenly any encode I try looks terrible. I have tried altering bitrates & cqm's (for example, I've tried h263, mpeg, both 6of9, several of the soulhunter, and the hvs) and end up with properly sized files that look unequivocally terrible, LOTS of macroblocking and texture loss, even when using bitrates up to 1600kbps. I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling the latest Xvid (Koepi 1.0.3) & GKnot, and yet the same problem.

This has occurred with multiple different movies so I don't think it's just a bad compression issue. (Also not playback, as old encodes still look fine). It's almost as if the 1st pass isn't really doing anything (?)

Does anyone have any experience with similar issues? Any suggestions? Following is a list of options I use:

Xvid 1.0.3, Deblocking Y & Deblocking UV set
Qpel (but tried on & off w/ no change in the poor quality)
GMC (ditto)
AQ (ditto)
B-vops: 2-1.5-1.0
B-vop sensitivity: 0 (but tried settings between -5 & 5)
Motion search: 6, VHQ: 1, turbo + chroma motion
Quants all set to 2/31

Just a blind shot: Check your 'zone' settings. You might accidentally have kept a zone for credits with a too-early startframe there. Yeah; it happened before! :)

Just checked, it's not the credit setting. Also, I don't know if this means anything or not, but I tried using the eqm-lr and eqm-hr matrices, and both give me *exactly* the same size file (which is 30% undersized & of similarly poor quality).

Is there any way to completely clean my registry of xvid? I was hoping I could start with a blank slate but when I uninstalled & cleaned my registry, upon reinstall it still had all of the same settings checked (which aren't defaults).
