View Full Version : What are the Xvid features that can change the bitstream?

I am organizing an Xvid test on a Dreamcast DivX player, and one of the testers has informed that none of the files I made can be played back. Here are the features I use on the test clips: H.263 matrix, no bframes, chroma optimizer, cartoon mode, msp = 6, VHQ 4, VHQ for bframes, chroma motion, Trellis. Which option(s) do you think might be causing this incompatibility?

fourcc? none of the above should be incompliant to DivX profiles...

Nothing suspicious as far as I can see.
Just a sidenote: You don't need VHQ for b-frames when you don't use b-frames.

..and what about packed bitstream? Was that used? It should be..And which Profile was used? Also, something I read in the DivX forums - if you use DXN HT, then packed bitstream will only be used on 1 frame, which is DivX compatible. But if you select packed bitstream outside of DXN HT thinking it would be DivX compatible, XviD might use it on 3 or more frames, thus making it incompatible..[?]

if you set it with 1 b-frames, its the same as allowed in the DXN HT profile

Teegedeck: yeah, you're right. I just use those VHQ settings by default.
stephanV: what fourCC should I try?
unskinnyboy: I used unrestricted profile, and packed bitsstream is greyed out when unchecking B-VOPs.

@bond: No b-frames.. :o missed that in the original post by a mile. Thanks.
@Chainmax: Yup, that's how it should be. I didn't notice the 'no b-frames' thing. bond just cleared my air...Speaking of which, did you try max.cons. b-vop =1 and packed bitstream? That's DivX compatible too..Can't think of anything wrong in your current setup.

I haven't been using B-Frames either lately ;) Are there (indipendent) advantages to not using them?

For a DivX player DIVX or DX50 come to mind. :)
BTW - you are not doing Q1 encodings or anything right?

I'll try DX50 then, thanks :). And no, I'm not doing Q1 encodes, the Dreamcast DivX player is quite modest and I want to try its limits, so I'm starting with low resolution, low bitrate video in order to test for audio limitations first.

DX50 didn't work. I'm going to try DIVX but I doubt it will solve the problem. Any more suggestions?

it really arent the options... give more info about other things... you are talking about audio: what audio-format are you using? muxing tool? container? etc.

Audio is MP3 ranging from --alt-preset cbr 48,64,96,128,192 to --aps and original 2_0 192kbps AC3. Container is AVI created with VDubMod 1.5.4.1 and muxed to the audio with AVI-Mux_GUI-1.16.11. Xvid version used is Koepi's XviD-1.1.0-Beta2-04042005.

This (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=65121) thread maybe helpful to troubleshoot that.
One way to know for sure is to do the final mux in VirtualDubMoD and see if that will work.

Great, thanks for that link :). If any of you wants to examine one of the files, here's the latest attempt:

Muxing with VDubMod 1.5.4.1 didn't solve the issue .

maybe you should up the audio settings a bit... go for 128 kbps 48 kHz... I don't know if players normally handle mpeg2 layer 3. and don't write OpenDML files for standalones.
can he play video without audio?

It seems like you have the wrong idea, this is not a standalone player, it's a software player for the Sega Dreamcast game console. As I said before, it's very modest and I'm pretty sure it can't handle high frequency audio. As a matter of fact, this first part of the test is meant to find the best quality audio possible with low resolutions and low bitrates. Further parts will try to find the highest average video bitrate, the highest resolution, and then the special ASP features (if any) it supports.
In any case, I know OpenDML file creation (what exactly is that?) can be disabled in AVIMuxGUI, but does VDubMod has that option at all?

In that case, I can think of no reason why the file wouldnt play, a software player that doesnt handle OpenDML or the file you uploaded there in any case, would be just silly.
Doesnt the player actually tell you (in a manual) what it cant and can do (if anything)?
VirtualDubMod never creates OpenDML if the file is smaller than 2GB (despite what GSpot is telling you).

Any progress? I have a Dreamcast, but was pretty disappointed with it's DivX playing/players back in the day, it would crash constantly :(

Well, I need testers but no one has tested my last atempt yet. If you want to try it out, the thread with the disc images of the video player is here:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=98258
and the latest encode can be downloaded from here:
