View Full Version : NTSC subs synced to PAL video

Can't get the subs to sync correctly. It works fine at the beginning of the movie, but jumps ahead about half way through. The subs are ripped by myself (using SubRIP) from NTSC DVD's and then used on PAL video. I guess this has something to do with the out-of-sync-issues !?
The start time of the sub is correct, but as I said: it jumps ahead of the picture/video.
How can I easily get the subs correct ?
I'm using the DVD Pro guide found on this site. And original .vob files, which is then burned to a DVD. No .avi files.
Any help/suggestion if much appreciated. Thanks.
EDIT: got it work now. Might either be me or Subtitle Workshop who messed it up. Hm... :P

KwanTai,
I am about to work on the reverse, PAL sub to NTSC disc. I may encounter the same problem as you did. Can you tell me what's wrong with your first attempt and how you fix it?

if the PAL-video is encoded progressively, demux it into its m2v & audio streams and apply dgpulldown to your m2v with the 23.976 to 25.000 framerates filled into the checkboxes.
if you mux your subs after this, they'll be in sync.
of course, you need to slowdown the audio, too.

scharfis_brain,
Thanks for the reply. But I am not planning to convert the disc from NTSC to PAL. What I wanted to do is to use a new sub (specified in the download site as 25fps) to subsitute an existing sub or add to a NTSC disc.
The new sub is in srt format. There is one thing I don't understand is why it is specified as 25fps. I look at the srt file, it is a text file with time code in the format "hh:mm:ss,ddd". I assume the "ddd" is 1/1000 second. So it could be used for any fps. The critical point should be when generating sup stream at which correct fps should be specified, rather than whether the srt is 25 or 30 fps or PAL or NTSC. Am I wrong?

Some sub formats go by frame rather then absolute time. Easy way to check it out is in Subtitle Workshop, using fps dropdown on left, saving as & comparing new file. RE: potential sync issues... Workshop & several other prog. let you fine tune for length etc... With subs not as precise as audio, personally don't think there should be too many worries about prob in middle, but might expect slightly different start times and total lengths due to different versions or releases.
