View Full Version : Gordian Knot with divx6 - what divx settings to set?

hey there,

I've been using GK for ages now with the old divx5.x to encode.....now however I updated to divx6 not so long back.

Now I had a look in the settings but the settings layout has changed a bit for the 1st pass and nth pass and no constant setting I can see to set for Credits only?

I've only tried to encode one film with it so far.....it was a fitness dvd so wouldn't have been too demanding, I made it 1.4gb target size, compressibility test said something ridiculous like 350%, but I had a go anyways.....the file finished converting sometime later, but it's only 585mb...although quality itself seems ok - nothing spectacular but ok

Now this second time, I'm attempting to convert movie Its A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, which is 2hrs 40mins long....with a compressability test it is saying 128.8% for just 1.4gb (I was planning on making it 2gb)....this surely can't be right - divx6 surely can't be that good a compresser and some 'default' setting is wrong.

could anyone please tell me what divx6 settings to set for each pass and credits? then I can have a proper go with this,

cheers,
Tuck

hmmmm I went through the walkthrough - changed all the relevant settings

the moment I try to do an encode, or a compressablility test I get the error

"Video Compression Error: The source image format is not acceptable. (error code -2)"

Now I've tried reading for answers on here and so far found none other than to check registry etc, all of which are fine.

I had a play about with some of the settings.....whilst still in unrestricted setting (turning on and off qpel, etc) and still the crash

I then set divx6 back to the home theate profile and it works fine again (!) ...tried again the home theatre profile with combinations of settings (that aren't locked out), and it seems to be running fine - so the problem seems to lie somewhere with the unrestricted settings....anyone any ideas?

cool - home theatre setting compressibility check on multipass, 1st pass, for that 2hr 40min film on 1.4gb is now saying 158024.7%

now that would be impressive :D

seriously tho - its p***ing me off a bit now as I'm slowly running out of HD space waiting to get this caughtup - any ideas?

Use Xvid instead? I gave up on Divx6 with AutoGK as it seemed to hijack all the settings, even when I chose to use Xvid.

heh I actually tried using xvid on the same film last night using the guide from doom9

this time the avi was 3.6gb!!!!!!!!! (for the 2hr 40min film)

I dont want to uninstall to go back to divx 5.2 but seems I may have to (oh and I've never used autoGK just the GK 0.35 as more configurable to set the res etc

I use GKnot with divX6 with no problems.

What final file size are you aiming for ??

Set that.

That type the bitrate into DivX6 in both modes.

Thats it !! Works fine.

I reverted back to v5.12 the one I was usually using however I had the same problems again still?

In the end I kept trying older versions and it finally seemed to work (after a few restarts too) back to normal, on the divx 5.0.5 and then upgrading (currently) to 5.1.1 and touch wood all ok. I'm going to have to have another go at putting the last divx 5 back on later and then maybe back to v6.

Mind, when you say you actually enter your bitrate in the divx6 window, at what point do you actually enter it? It never got that far for me...I noticed the tutorial for the new divx6 with GK mentions that you have to adjust it yourself each time manually, however it doesn't mention it again any further (that I noticed).

Just a thought, I know that installing newer XviD without first uninstalling the older versions can cause serious filesize issues - it could be the same with DivX.

heh that could prob explain why I had a serious filesize issue with xvid :D 3.5gb as opposed to the targetted 1.95 - I generally uninstall the divxs but to be honest never the xvids.

gah next time I restart am gonna uninstall both, restart then put latest back on from scratch again :)

Entering bitrate in DivX 6 ...

Just go to options window in GK and do it there. Make certain that its set to multipass 1 pass, and multipass nth pass.

Then when in the fianl window, (can't think what to call it!!) the window where you set sound and divX commands, just save the DivX settings again, no need to change them, they will be already set.
