Guys,
Anyone know which gives better results?
I've always used XVid but now wonder whether DivX6 gives better results.
Any opinions??????
Thanks

Any opinions??????quality is in the eye of the beholder.. since none of us has your eyes, none of us can tell you what you will think works best for you.

That I appreciate but surely their is a general concensus of what people prefer.
I'm using a 42" plasma so quality is near on the same (to my eyes) thing is, I don't want to re-encode my whole DVD collection, purchase a projector and find I've used the wrong codec!!!
What are most people using??

but surely their is a general concensus of what people prefer.well, we have that "what's best" rule for a reason.. everybody's opinion on what's better is correct, it's because we all percieve quality in a different way. Some have weird reasons for using a certain codec, so being an engineer I have difficulties with reasons that do not appear to make any sense, but when it comes to "it looks better to me", it's just something you have to accept. I would try a few movies, see if you can spot a difference, and if you can, pick whichever one looks better to you. If you cannot, it's probably best to stick to what you're already used to.

I understand the 'What's Best' rule and appreciate why it shouldn't be asked, I was kind of looking at it as more of a poll ;) if you know what I mean.
I'll do some tests as you say and check it out!!!
Thanks Again For Your Help!

Well if it's of any use, I'll give my opinion.
I convert using AutoGK and AVI.NET.
Codecs I've used include the previous DivX version (5) plus the current (6), and Xvid.
For the conversions I do, using the resolutions and file sizes (and bearing in mind I tend to prefer conversions with at least 1100 kbps upwards), I found Xvid seemed to produce a sharper more detailed picture. Also I found the colour representation and saturation slightly more preferable.
However, I've tended to find for the constraints that I convert to, that video seems much more prone to macroblocks when I've converted using Xvid.
That's why I currently stick to DivX, as using the same target constraints, I don't suffer from macroblocks. However, the picture doesn't seem quite as sharp or vibrant (in terms of colour representation and saturation).

The kind of answer I'm looking for.
Many Thanks!
