I've used Tmpg quite a bit, and I've done tons of studying since I because a video junkie, but this confounds me.
My question is, what are the differences between the "motion estimation (fast)" mode and the "normal" or slower modes?

I ask this because I am re-encoding a MPEG2 TV capture after some light processing in AVS, with a lower bitrate than I recorded it with (I recorded it with VBR 6400, max 8000. The TMPG bitrate is 5410 2-pass VBR with 8000 max)
and I am using the "motion estimation" mode and there is no increased blocking (actually the video looks better than any of my encodes at "ultra slow" mode ever did). The only blocking occurs at the scenes where the source had blocking. So, since this is a faster mode (which I automatically assume is worse quality) why is it producing better looking video than the slower modes? That is why I ask what the differences are.
I'll check the help file to see if that says anything.

I have some other questions, but I'm too tired to remember them right now :p
I'll post them when/if I remember them
