Hi,
Did some searching and couldn’t get any conclusive answers. I want to use an XviD to re-code my 1440X1080i (pure interlaced) home movies (mpeg2) to mpeg4. XviD renders a more accurate frame than WM9 (in my opinion), and it is, of course, faster. Problem is going from this 60i to 29.97P, there are going to be frame drops occasionally, ~1 every 10 seconds (naturally). And I have heard XviD can't handle this interlaced information for 1080 (what ever that means). Is there any way around this, or am I stuck using slow poke WM9. Thanks to all those who care to help me with this ;) Hopefully there is a way to use XviD without dropping those frames periodically.

60i = really 59.94i, so no frame drops... i dont know if XviD does interlaced encoding and if it is limited to a certain resolution.

separatefield and make resize 1440*544@1280*720 it's IMO the best solution if you want only 29.990 fps in HDTV resolution ...

Could you please explain - I'm not that technically advanced. Since my pixels here are not square (16:9 AR), the 1440 really looks like 1920. How do I separatefield, and how do I do "1440*544@1280*720" - sorry for the stupid questions. How would you do a true 1920X1080 pure interlace, same way but "1920*544@1280*720" ? I have been reducing these to 1376x768 and getting very good results using the DXN HDTV profile and a fixed quant between 2-3.5. I can get what looks like near lossless on my 1600 x 1200 display, and fit about 3 hours onto a single DVDR.

<BUMP>, how to "separatefield and make resize 1440*544@1280*720 ", or make each frame "progressive" - I thought I needed WM9 to do that, didn't know XviD could. Is vdubmod the only shell which can accomplish this then?

Have a look at AviSynth, a frame server that can easily separate the fields (field one consists of lines 1,3,5 etc, field two of lines 2,4,6 etc). The frames can be serverd to vdub to be encoded using xvid. AviSynth webpage and doom9s have good faqs/guids to get you started.
