Okay, I've got a couple of avi's with subs. My problem is, no matter what (PC)player I use, the subs appear in two or three layers, you know, like...
How is Martha?
How is Martha?
How is Martha?
I figure it is a player (media classic, windows,...) prob because I found the subs online with no mention of them being wonky.

Please give a few more details.
Did you hardcode the subs and how, what format were they etc...?

make sure you player does not load multiple subtitle filters at the same time, or the same filter a couple of times. This kind of stuff you usually get when you have for example MPC's internal subtitle engine turned on and VSFilter (or DVobSub) in autoload mode. Other players alos have intenral subtitle engines and there may also be other external subtitle filters that try to autoload when a matching subtitle file is in the same directory as the movie.

DivxG400 is another filter which defaults to auto-loading subtitle files ...
