subtitle help really needed please

Hello there,

I bought a DVD the other day and removed the packaging and found that the movie is in fact in another language. I was going to take it back but found out that there sold out of the english version of the movie so they gave me this one, strange. Anyway i thought it would be possible to download the english subs for this movie. The movie is in chinese and has japanese and korean subs. I found that the actual movie is only spoken in chinese so i would of have to download the english subs any how. Now I obviously would have to rip my dvd which i have done using dvd decrypter i have now a load of VOB files, i also have managed to find on the internet a English Sub file which was ripped using sub ripper, it was a rar and when i opened the rar i found 2 files that said in it 'srt cd1' 'srt cd2' Now how can i add this into the dvd vob files? then i would like to turn the VOB files back into a DVD image and burn it using dvd decrypter.

Is it even possible to add these 2 srt files into a dvd vob? or do i actually need a srt that has been ripped from a single dvd image?

This would be quite a lot of work. First of all you have to join the 2 subtitle files. The problem is that you don't know the timing of the second file. Maybe Subtitle Workshop would help with it.
Then you'll have to convert the srt to sup. Look in this forum for SubtitleCreator. Then you have to follow this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=83566) tutorial.

There are a few stickies available on this. You need to demux the video audio and subtitles : Dvddecryptor demux all, then remux, say using IFOEdit, with the new subtitles (and chapter info - DVDD settings) audio and video (not vob). You can use srt2sup to create the new subtitles or subtitle creator (after joining and synching using subtitle workshop, which does have a very good manual, btw. Can take time or forever) Subtitle creator also has subsynch methods. Try try try.

However, a good way of creating the video is to try DVDLabPro. It's available as a 30day trial version so could suit yr needs or you might be so impressed you'll buy it!

I had to learn this for similiar reasons. It takes time, you make mistakes but it is never less than interesting

Briefly, Not trying to replace guides &/or stickies, subs in a DVD are sort of a video overlay track made up of pictures. SRT files are the text files a DVD authoring program can use to create these overlay tracks. The easiest way to add english subs might be to find & download actual sub files & add them via something like Ifoedit, Rejig etc. where you just mux in the extra track & select the sub with the player. It would be more involved but very possible to substitute the english sub for one of the others already there.

If all you can find are the srt files, just one file is preferable because that should preserve the timing. I normally use Subtitle Tool to join srt files, but then you usually have to play with the delay where you joined them.

To add srt files to a DVD, you can either turn them into an overlay track & mux with the DVD, or use authoring software to create the track along with new DVD files -- there are several tools to do either. When re-authoring a DVD you have more options, but also more work. You'll have to go through the various guides & such to decide which methods you want to use, or if it's all too much work to bother with (rather then exchanging the DVD).

FWIW, *If* you want to go to the trouble of re-authoring the DVD, DVDA (available as a trial I think) might be the easiest to use when you have timing issues, for example where you joined srt files.

Well, if you're in the US, go back to the store and demand a replacement with English subs. Since it's the same movie, you should not have any trouble.
