View Full Version : "invalid video_ts.ifo" error

Problem all,

So I'm still very new at DVD Rebuilder. I am trying to backup the Battlestar Galactica miniseries. I ripped the proper PGC with DVD Decryptor into a folder as I would do for most other encoding chains (d2v/avs/x264.exe etc). I run the whole folder through DVD Rebuilder, it picks up the sole title set correctly with the additional languages and subs. I chose to keep the 5.1 English AC3 and no subs. I am using CCE SP 2.70. It encodes m2vs without incident, but then at the end of the rebuilding phase I get the following error message:
"Improper VIDEO_TS.ifo file. ABORTING".
The rebuilding phase finishes, and in the output directory there are lots of happy VOBs that play nicely in VLC, but sadly the video_ts.ifo and vts_01_0.bup files are 0 bytes. Therefore I am missing files for a spec compliant DVD. Why is this happening, and how can I correct it / avoid it in the future?

I searched a bit and found this post, which has a similar problem, but the posted solution (see second quote) doesn't seem to apply to me, as I don't have a video_ts.bup file in my source folder.

From sup191's post in the DVD rebuilder bug report forum

Also, I got a different error with 0.47 - again with no error from QuENC. This time, I got a pop-up saying "Improper VIDEO_TS.IFO file. ABORTING"

The last thing in the status window is:
- Updated IFO: VTS_04_0.IFO
Correcting VTS Sectors...

After clearing the pop-up, the status window added:

Phase III, REBUILD completed in 240 minutes.

Done.
-----------------------------------------------------

When I went to check the VIDEO_TS.IFO, there was none in my source directory, and there was a 0-byte one in my Rebuilder target directory. I have no idea why there wasn't one in the source directory; might have been nice if this was checked up-front rather than after 36 hours of chugging away. (It would really be nice if the program had grabbed the BUP file instead, but that would be "exceeding expectations".)

Solution - from NobbyNobbs' post

Just delete the final VIDEO_TS folder, make a copy of the original VIDEO_TS.BUP, and rename to VIDEO_TS.BUP, then choose rebuild again

Anyway, in my source directory the only ifo/bup file that I have is VTS_01_0.ifo.

Help me out people :)

Thanks in advance,

When DVD Rebuilder works with the IFO files, it does a sanity check. There are some characters in the first 12 bytes of the IFO file that are there specifically for that purpose. On the VIDEO_TS.IFO is should have "DVDVIDEO-VMG" in those bytes. "Invalid VIDEO_TS.IFO" means the file has failed that sanity check.

The VIDEO_TS.IFO is a requirement to be DVD compliant. If I understand what you are saying correctly, the source directory is missing that file. The only conclusion I can come to is that somehow DVD Decrypter "missed" that file or, more likely, you have one of the options set in DVD Decrypter that is modifying its normal ripping process.

I think the key is "I ripped the proper PGC..." -- DVD Rebuilder needs you to rip the entire DVD to hard drive, not just one PGC. If you want to make an entire DVD from just one PGC (the largest), that is possible in movie-only mode -- but you still need the entire original for DVD to work with.

as I don't have a video_ts.bup file in my source folder.
I would try re-ripping the disc in file mode, and make sure that you have all files selected and that they copy to your source folder. RB can't copy to the output folder what isn't there in the first place.

unfortunately i lent this dvd to a friend of mine. is there any way of recreating the files without re-ripping? if not, no big deal I can just re-rip later this week when my lazy stoner buddy gets around to returning the dvd ;)

:thanks: :D

You can use IFOEDIT to create new IFO files for you. But there will be no menus...

Worked perfectly. Thanks!
