I am using DVD-RB 0.93(free) with CC2.5SP. I want to use DVD-RB on the main movie only. However, this feature is not available on the free version. So I use DVDshrink3.2 to maximize the compress on trailer, extra... and do a no compression on the main movie. Then I use DVD-rb on this newly put together movie folder. After something like a 24hr with DVD-Rb, it said out of cache. If I just use DVD-RB on the regular movie, everything works fine. Anyone tried this?

Before I became a RB-DVD VIP (donated) I did basically what you describe. I ran a movie thru Shrink and Reauthored for only the movie and English audio - no extras at all. Ran Shrink with No Compression. Then I ran the results thru RB 0.93. Everything ran fine. Probably took about 3-4 hours or so - that is what most re-encodings take me using RB with HC or QuEnc. Don't remember the movie title now. Resultant DVD played good.
BTW - just bought CCE Basic - wow what an improvement in encoding times - about half of HC or QuEnc.

I often do it and I'm doing it again right now. Try with another movie and let's know if it's same.

Really? Hm. I tried it on two different movies and one after running about 24 hours, it said out of cache. Another one gave me an error code but I don't remember the code now. I don't remember the movie names now but I will try some new one I. By the way, I amd doing a 3 pass so my normal DVD-RB time is about 11hours.

3 pass is one pass too much. 2 pass is highly enough.

Hm. Just finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban with the same procedure and it went ok. I lowered to 2 pass instead of 3 passes and the movie finished about 2hr & 20minutes. So not sure why it didn't work with the other 2 movies before.

I use this procedure also to get the main movie with the sound chans I want. To me it's the same quality... still I wonder about the dummy VOBs in Shrink.
Is it better to do it through DVD-RB instead? Thanks.

I'll sometimes run it through 'Shrink even though I'm using the Pro version of DVD Rebuilder. I use it to shrink down the menus, while keeping everything else at "No Compression." No trouble yet!

... Does anyone know, by the by, if Jdobbs plans on incorporting Menu reduction? I realize that the button-over-video thing would probably prove to be a headache -- but CCE'd blow the pants off of 'Shrink's best work, and with far less size.

Yes. Probably in v1.10. But, honestly, in most discs the amount of space you recover really isn't worth the effort. The biggest reason I don't do it now is because -- I REALLY HATE UGLY MENUS... they just ruin a disc and turn you off the moment you put it in.

The BOV code is already there -- I have to take care of them in VTSs (like follow-the-rabbit in "The Matrix").

@Jdobbs

It's cool to hear that menu reduction's on the list. :) I suppose maybe pulling a Recode and offering a "leave menus at original quality" option would give users a little flexibility there. (I know, I know: You've got ENOUGH on your plate, dammit!) ;)

.

just out of curiousity, how much were you able to shrink the menus WITHOUT noticing a moderate drop in quality?

I've backed-up some disks with menus over 800MB! Usually I've managed to compress them to 75%-85% of their original size without a noticeable change.

I think being able to compress menus will make rebuilder a much bigger commercial success... just my opinion.

I've used NuMenu4U for many bloated menus and they don't look bad at all. If you use CCE, try encoding them with Q40 and a lowish bitrate matrix.

There is no reason why a menu clip should look poor after re-encoding - just avoid using rejig and concentrate on either CCE or HC Encoder in the NuMenu settings.
