I burned my first duel layer DVD today and it burned fine with no errors using nero 6.3.1.20. I burned it with a pioneer dvr-108. It plays fine on my computer in powerdvd on both my burner and my toshiba DVD-ROM but it is not recongnize on my panasonic progressive scan or my pioneer 520 dvr set top units. On my panasonic standard set top (the oldest unit i have) it starts to play the dvd intro then justs stops.

Are there any known issues with the pioneer dvr-108 burner or nero 6.x?

These are verbatim dvd+r DL's.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try using PGCEdit and DVD Decrypter to burn it.
That can be a layerbreak situation problem.
Also set the booktype to DVD-ROM

For the first time Nero failed me. I burned it with pgcedit using the guide I found on the pgcedit site and it worked like a charm. It plays in all my settop players except my DVR which is no big deal. Thank you for your help.

I just checked the data base over at VideoHelp.com – the listing of standalone DVD units. Bad news -- according to their reports, the Pioneer DVR- 520H will not play dual layer DVD+R discs. This has been confirmed by several owners.

Here is the chart on that player:

The owners confirm that it will play:

CDR
CDRW
DVD-R
DVD-RW
DVD+R
VCD
SVCD
JPG
MP3
WMA

They also confirm that it will not play:
DVD+RW
DVD+R dual layer
DivX

There have been no reports on whether or not it can handle the newer DVD-R dual layer discs, so far.

Here is a direct link to the page with all of the info on that DVD player:

Now, for your Panasonic. (Or are there two of these, this was not clear.) What model is this unit? You mentioned it is a progressive scan unit, but did not give us the model number. I just checked their listing on Panasonics, and it confirms what I already knew about their units, overall… Out of a total of 209 Panasonic standalone DVD players listed, only 17 are reported to be able to handle the DVD+R dual layer discs.

Yes I already found that on another forum. Pioneer just released the DVR-533H that does play them and it retails cheaper then the dvr-520H. I guess if I waited just a few months longer before purchasing I could have bought that. Anyway I have plenty of players in the house that will play it so its no big deal.
