View Full Version : Proposed Forum Members Gear Sticky

Like many members on the forum I've opted to detail the specifications of some of my computer gear within my signature.

But given that you can use up to 500 letters in your sig, if every member used this facility the threads would soon look very untidy....

Anyway, I was wondering whether it might be useful to have a dedicated sticky located somewhere on the forum where members could list the specifications of their computer gear and/or maybe even their audio/video gear as well. Each member could then place a link in their sig pointing to their "gear" post.

To get the ball rolling (so to speak) I've placed a list of my gear is in the post below this one....

But.... What do you guys think?

yeah, sounds like a good idea. not sure how useful a lot of it is (it's more a hardware forum thing where this info is needed), but it's good to know what everyone's using.

geek box:

- athlon 64 3500 939 pin
- gigabyte k8 triton nforce 4 blah blah mobo
- gigabyte GF 6600 gt w/ 256 ram, PCI-e
- 1 gig RAM (expanding soon...why not?)
- 650 gigs in various drives (also expanding soon - there's still lots of empty drive bays in my box)
- 19" trinitron (ex-gov IBM with dents in, but nice picture)
- V-Stream DVB-T PCI
- antec sonata (quiet!) case.

A/V equipment:

- no-name 68cm CRT TV w/ composite, YC and component inputs (and warped edges, but a clean enough picture for monitoring encodings)
- crapful DVX mpeg-4/DVD player that decodes mpeg-2 wrong
- yamaha a-250 reciever (65 watts of justice, 2ch)
- jensen dx-7 speakers (130 watt, 35-24000 Hz)
- koss R-80 headphones (totally need the pads replaced... ew. great sound though)
- cables everywhere, linking everything with everything else

not sure how useful a lot of it isMy point exactly.. it isn't really useful except in rare cases. And even in hardware forums I see it more as a form of gloating than anything else.

@Forum moron (p.s. with such a name if somebody calls you moron I'll have a hard time justifying a strike seeing as this is half of your username): I think I already made that point. I currently have a PC to show off as well but there's really no need for me to show off.. And if there are hardware problems, we have a hardware forum where you can post specs where appropriate.

I agree with Doom9.
If someone has problems, let him include his gear description in the post.
By posting here...this thread would have become huge, and searching the thread for a specific user, well...it would be rather messy.

well, if you want gloat, you can have it:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
Shuttle SN25P barebone system
2x 512 MB PC3200 Kingston HyperX DDR RAM CL2
Gigabyte Geforce 7800GT GFX card, 256MB
Primary HD: WD Raptor 150GB (10k RPM, SATA II)
Secondary HD: Hitachi Deskstar 250 GB (7.2k RPM, SATA II)
NEC ND3540A (unfortunately not SATA, NEC: step up to the plate and give me SATA)
Primary monitor: DELL 3007WFP (2560x1600, dual link DVI)
Secondary monitor: Philips 230W5B2 (1920x1080, single link DVI)

Still, I just had to gloat a little since I recently upgraded my box (Raptor & the most awsome screen there is for a PC (which by the way supports 1280x800 as a native resolution.. it's a quarter of what the display can do so it just puts 4 pixels together and treats it as one.. makes it an excellent choice for DVD playback without much of any scaling)..

I'm certainly not gloating about my... well junk:

"Good" PC:
- Pentium III-EB 933MHz
- Gigabyte 6VX7-4X mobo (Via Apollo Pro 133A chipset)
- 512MB PC133 SD-RAM
- GeForce 2 Ti 64MB (it's only...five generations old)
- 80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7
- 20GB IBM Deskstar (I found it in some crappy Duron system being thrown out ^_^)
- Sony DDU1621 DVD-ROM drive (really a rebranded Lite-On)
- USB 2.0 PCI card (NEC controller)
- Crappy 17" Gateway EV700 CRT monitor - getting darker every day!
- Win98SE/Win2k/Ubuntu 5.10

AV stuff:
- 14" Hitachi CRT TV (UHF only as it was bought in the UK, so useless for cable here - handy for monitoring VHS captures though)
- Crap JVC HR-J595EK VHS VCR (only good thing about it is the heads are new and clean)
- Yamada DVD-6500X DVD/MPEG4 player
- Sony CMT-CPX11 MP3 CD hi-fi
- '91 Pioneer A-P710 component hi-fi (I plug the PC into the "LD" inputs)

Now I have a real job for 7 months I can hopefully afford a real PC!

(EDIT - 7 months later)...And I did :D :
- Core 2 Duo E6300
- MSI 975X Platinum PowerUp Edition (i975X chipset)
- 2x512MB PC2-4200 DDR2 RAM
- GeForce 7600GT 256MB
- NEC ND-3520AW DVD burner
- Pinnacle PCTV Stereo (Philips SAA7134) capture card
- WD Caviar 320GB HDD
- Dell P991 19" Trinitron
- Windows XP Pro SP2/Kubuntu 6.10
- Maxtor External 300GB USB/FireWire HDD

Display: Hitachi 42" high-def 16:9 Panel

Erm... no offence but that doesn't say much for the specs, does it?

What is high-def for your display?

Server/main machine: P4@3.2GHz, 1GB HT RAM, 160GB SATA, Asus mobo, nVidia 6600Pro/256MB, WinTV/Radio, 2x DVD-R DL (one lightscribe), Win2003Srv.

Multimedia/gaming machine: P4@3.2GHz EM64T, 1GB RAM, 200GB SATA, Asus mobo, ATI X700Pro/256MB (bliah - this machine has seen better days), Audigy2, DVD-R, WinXP x64 (not sure I've done good).

...both machines on an Eizo 17" TFT.

HEPC: P4@2.6GHz, 512MB HT RAM, 120GB SATA, on-board 7.1 audio card, great Ahanix silver case with VFD, Chaintech Zenith mobo, Hauppauge PVR-350 TV, Logitech z-550 5.1 speakers (great for the price), Marmitek PC Control remote (IR/RF), DiNovo keyboard/mouse/mediapad (great), WinXP SP2 and MediaPortal... all this on an old 21" Sony WEGA CRT TV.

...plus three removable disks (USB2/FW/FW800): 1x500GB, 2x320GB.

...plus various other things I forget or want to forget.

Soon:

- Replace TV with Amoi LC37AF1E TrueHD 1080p 37" LCD (maybe within the month).
- Better gfx card for the multimedia machine.
- Maybe the whole HEPC will switch to something different (inside).
- A nice MCE/3D mouse/remote I've seen coming soon.
- Add DVB-T/S card(s).
