Hi there,

I have a laptop that has a firewire port and a PC that has a firewire card, i also have a firewire cable. I connected the cable from my PC to my laptop and i thought my laptop would recongnise the link but it did not. I basically want to transfer a lot of data files such as mp3 and video data from my PC to my laptop. How can i do this using firewire?

Any help much appreciated

Thank you very much

I recently bought two Firewire cards with the intention of transferring big files (like dvd images), and although I have not used it yet I found out that there is a program called Firenet which is for setting up a firewire network on 2 or more PCs.

As I say, I haven't used the Firenet software myself, and you should probably search around for other solutions as well. Also, bear in mind that Firenet transfer cables should not be longer than 4 metres long unless you use other equipment like signal repeaters.

At least windows xp lists firewire card as network device and ip over firewire should be supported. I would try to adjust the ip addresses and subnets options of both computers and then try to connect.

Some information: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262319/en-us

Basicly all this means that you need to enable networking and use disk shares.

Hi guys,

thanks for all your replys,

Hi video_magic

I am thinking to use this Firenet software, do you know much about as in can i use it with my existing firewire cable?

My cable is way less than 4 Metres so that should be fine, but i only hav one cable is that all you need?

Do i also need to install the software on my laptop and on my PC and buy 2 keys to activate them?

Any help much appreciated

Many thanks

Read my lips: you don't need firenet.

bad luck there, shinigami-chan

i haven't actually tried linking two compies via 1394, but i've got a USB 2.0/1394 hard disk enclosure with a 200 gig drive in it. that serves most of my transfer needs. aren't many files bigger than 200 gigs (except feature-length uncompressed movies i guess - which i'd like to store on this puppy eventually).

If it's still in XP, Direct Cable Connection should do the trick. I used it to transfer small files via a Serial Cable between 2 PCs, and I managed to play a few games between the 2 computers. But if it doesn't support Firewire, or IEEE 1394 devices, then I can't offer any suggestions.

Failing that, a crossover Ethernet cable (about £5 for a 5m length) should do the trick better than the Firewire cable should. I have no problems with using an Ethernet cable, because it's so much more versatile than anything else I have tried to use.
