The way I read it, Variable Bitrate is designed to use the least amount of space while achieving the best quality....... so, If the finished file size is not a concern, would it make sense to encode at Constant Bitrate?

If so, how high?

Is it OK to encode at 9000 if you have the room?

If the source is 6000 average, does it make any difference if re-encoded at a higher rate?

:thanks:

constast bitrate is only usfull up to the level that your player can read too, so if it can only read 6k/s and you encode to 7k/s it won't work to well

and likewase, re-encoding with a higher bitrate is still going to lose quality and won't do any good, unles your going from high compression codec to low commpression (mpeg-4 to mpeg2)

Thanks.

I just found out the long way that encoding at 9000 CBR won't playback very well. :(

Welcome to the forum dave.

as you observed constant bitrate that high could pose an issue. although as long as the other assets are less than the dvd max (100080) then it SHOULD be ok.. alot of studios tend to use constant quality or constant quantizer since dvd9 is usually enough to hold a movie done that way.. (this allocates bitrate as needed per scene while observing a max cutoff) .. like why on earth would a dvd manufacturer make a dvd that is 5gb.. just large enough to require dvd9 but you would thing they would try to squeese onto a dvd5 or cut loose on the bitrate and fill up the dvd9..

so i would advise OPV (1-pass) at say q of 5 and max bitrate of 9000.. thats if size isnt an issue. it'll create enough peaks and valleys that will give the player time to recover from sections at 9000 (if any)
