I've got an avi and its sub and idx file. However, I cannot get Windows Media or Media Player Classic to play with the sub track.

The files read as tlf-vital.avi, tlf-vital.idx, and tlf-vital.sub.

you need to have vobsub, and configure directvobsub to load when needed, or always load.
bottom line, if it doesn't show a green arrow in the tray, it won't work :)

(if you have haali's splitter to decode avi, which you probably don't, you need to go into its own properties to get it to load vsfilter)

maybe i'm wrong, but i've never needed vobsub (vsfilter) in mpc. i'm able to play all form of subs i just have without it (the 'vobsub' form too). maybe u just need to select it in the stream switcher; 'play' (or right click) -> filters -> scroll down to the stream (lowest item) -> ... and select.

that's the internal subtitle renderer, it's fine too, but it won't fix his windows media player issue :)

Okay, when I try to load the subtitles in MPC I get: "To load subtitles you have to change video renderer type and reopen the file."

to use the internal subtitler you need to use either of the renderless modes. Open mpc, type O, go to playback>output, and select a renderer with ** 2 stars. they all have popup hints.
