View Full Version : How can I create subtitles from DVR-MS Closed Captioning?

I use a Portable Media Center to watch TV because I work two full-time jobs and have no other way to catch up on things. Coworkers usually want to watch with me but the speaker is WAY too low to hear in any noisy break room. It's intolerable that the DVR-MS files have Closed Captioning included in the extra data but only stuff like the show description make it over to the automatically converted & synch'd WMV file. There should be an option to include Closed Captioning, but there isn't. I'll have to compensate. How can I take the DVR-MS file, extract the Closed Captioning data and produce a WMV file (Or whatever, the WMP10/EHOME Media Center Edition synch process will still re-convert for portability) with the Closed Captioning text encoded graphically as being overlaid on the video? If possible, can it receive the same placement as the original CC?

If I can get help with this process I will share it with other PMC users. You'll be helping out a lot of people! Thanks!

OK, I found some MSDN docs about converting DVR-MS to WMV9 and copying over the metadata that contains the CC but what good would that do? Is there some sort of "CC standard" that a media player could interpret? How do I get the CC out of the metadata in a format that I can then overlay onto the video?
